HEy i just thought could I just use a tube screamer to boost the distortion channel on the amp to boost the gain and make it more metal.
Yes, you can. I'm currently using a tubescreamer-ish sort of pedal to boost my Tiny Terror... and it works for some pretty decent metal tones.

I'm not sure if I just have a messed up pedal or if that's intentional but it's kind of annoying sometimes if you're not used to it.
It's a built in noise gate. Pop the back of the pedal off, and you can turn the gate off.

I always reccomend getting a decent tube amp thats geared for metal number one. Pedal distortion will only satisfy for so long. Be that as it may, there are some decent pedals out there that can get you by until then.

Blackstar HT Dual - Awesome Tube distortion pedal
Damage Control Solid Metal, cool pedal tube distortion
Zoom Tri-Metal, usually I have anything by zoom but they got this one right
Rocktron Metal Planet
Pro Tone Body Rot II, "this one gets very mean"
Electro Harmonix Metal Muff, gets a bit fizzy, but its a good fizz dont know how to explain it.
Digitech Black 13, Anthrax Sig pedal, has lots of usable distortions on it

Decent pre-amp will also work to but they can cost a grip, Here are a few that you can score cheap and will get a decent metal tone.

Rocktron Chameleon
ADA MP-1, Tube pre-amp, will do thrash very well, It helps if you boost it.

Personally I would stay from Boss pedals if at all possible, Alot of them have the bee's in a can syndrome. Alot of Distortion pedals suffer with that to some degree or another but Boss seems to be worse. Especially the Metalzone and Metalcore

I'm fairly new to playing Metal and I liked playing through the Boss DS-1 but hey, I think Drew or Ben would know better.
