David Eddings

I'm reading the Belgariad and it is one of the best books I've read. It amazes me how much people like Paolini have copied off of him.

Anyway are there any other similar but still original writers that you guys know of?

i like George E Martin.
similar to Eddings but more blood thirsty and quite willing to let characters die off.

I believe I have read a couple of Martin's books, and if I recall correctly they are somewhat graphic/explicit, so take this as due warning that there might be some objectionable content.

Ooh my mom is a big fan of David Eddings and gave me one of his books for my bday...I'm saving it to read on vacation, and I'm quite looking forward to it. I'll check back after I've read it.

The book I received was book 1 of the Belgariad and I quite liked it, enough that I went out last night and bought books 2 and 3 It's very enjoyable high fantasy - and makes for great summer reading. I particularly enjoy the dialogue, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the rest of the series.

i would suggest Robert Jordan as well, but he tends to get complicated vey quickly, and then he did no one a favour by dying after writing 11 or so books in the series. The Wheel of Time

I've heard of the first guy, but have never got around to reading any of his stuff... once I finish 20,000 leagues under the sea I'm going to get the rest of Edding's books before I start another series.

Did you finish the Belgariad?

I talked with an employee at Barnes and Noble who said that there's another series that picks up right where the Belgariand leaves off...then there's two books (Belgarath the Sorcercer and Polgara the Sorceress) that detail the same events from each of their perspectives, and then a bunch of standalone books.

I also have read all of the Wheel of Time, and I agree, there's a similar feel (probably because of the different nations and cultures, and the political dimension to the books), however mercifully Eddings moves faster than Jordan did (BTW anyone know when A Memory of Light is coming out??)

Don't know if I'll read all of Edding's work, but I'm definitely looking forward to finishing the Belgariad.

I've read the first 3 books of the belgariad... I'm working on gettting the other two. The books you are talking about are in the Mallorean series. However I was told that it is almost Identicle to the Belgariad so it isnt worth the read.

I finished the Belgariad yesterday, and greatly enjoyed it. I felt the dialogue got sharper as the books went on, and all in all the books felt like what Wheel of Time could have been if it had been only 6 books and better dialogue.

Don't know if I'll read the Mallorean series just yet, though. We shall see.
