A New Battle!

I have decided we need to have a new battle championship on here, being that there hasn't been one for a while.

What should it be?

I think there's a thread about them, but have we ever had a battle of the best cover songs?

I like the cover songs.

We never did do a battle of the 80s.

I'm not sure about a battle of the 00s yet. For things like this, it helps to let a decade sit for a couple of years and let perspective settle in.

From what I recall, the Battle of the 60s and the 80s were called off due to 2 reasons:

1) I'm lazy.
2) Not enough people had heard full albums from these decades.

I think it would be interesting to do one right now right after the fact while everything is fresh on our minds, and then wait a little and do another after everything has simmered. Either way, we all know Kid A will win both times, but the one a couple years down the line will most likely have overlooked gems such as "Apologies to the Queen Mary" and "Boxer" making their marks, kind of like it took a lot of people a decade or so to realize that the Velvet Underground were so important.

If Kid A were to win, I would weep and then punch somebody.

OK Computer won the 90s battle against much stiffer competition. Do you think there's a chance Kid A wouldn't win the 00's battle?

If there's one, I say it should be the 00's, 80's, or battle of the best music videos. For the videos, we could link to youtube, so everyone could watch and judge (since embedding isn't allowed here for some reason).

A while back I went through this list Pitchfork had of the 100 coolest videos ever. It was the best 6 hours or so of my life.

I don't know how many people consider Kid A to have been as great as OK Computer. I also don't think it's as accessible as OK Computer either. I do think there is a chance that an obtuse IDM record could be beaten by something else. I'm not certain what that something else would be though.

I also believe that Kid A isn't considered to be the definitive album of the 00s, although that hasn't been talked about very much. The main thing I appreciate it for in the blending of genres, something that wasn't done much back in 2000.

I think it should be that. Something fresher. Also, that way we could incorporate all decades of rock from the 60s onward (I think stuff like the "Strawberry Fields Forever" promo video counts as a music video).

I think history will judge OK Computer as Radiohead's essential album. Kid A was a huge deal back in 2000, but it didn't really do anything in terms of influencing a movement of music that decade definitive albums usually do. I think the main problem here is that for the first time in rock history, we went through a decade absent a true defining album. Kind of depressing.

That said, I still think Kid A would win.
