I'm not sure the song "Stars" (Switchfoot) is in Lydian...

I don't think it is in a lydian... because I've worked out most of the notes and it's more of an D Major/D Mixolydian. I was reading on Wikipedia and somebody thought it was in a lydian mode but I'm pretty sure it's not.

The intro is in Lydian. It has the distinctive Lydian raised fourth in the fourth beat of the second bar.

The verse goes into the Mixolydian. They don't ever return to the original modality, which is a bit of a shame...

Okay, your right, it's just that little section octave intro thing that is. It's just the rest of the song goes in between a mixolydian and a normal major. Yeah, that's kinda sad that it doesn't return to a lydian because it sounds pretty cool. But overall I think the Mixolydian does fit better for the rest of the song.
