Opinion/Help

I led worship in our youth group a a few weeks ago, which our sound guy recorded. I was hoping some of you better singers then me could give some constructive criticism of my voice.

The song choice of that night was "All We Need" by Charlie Hall

And yes, I am prepared for you to say "Don't quit your day job."

Strictly critiquing your vocals, you seemed to lack emotion and energy. Your pitch was fine, your clarity was fine, and your volume was consistant but you just need to have the confidence to give it that emotion-filled umph. You seem a bit nasally too. Let your air come from your gut (diaphram) and not your mouth or throat. Besure to open ALL of your air passages while singing.

The tempo of the song was dragging too so this could have resulted in the lack of energy.

That song doesn't allow you to show a lot of range so I'm curious as to where you stand on range but overall I would rate you as someone who has potintial but needs a little work. I think in time you'll be great!

I'm gonna repeat everything that guyskankrye just said. It sounds like you aren't breathing correctly and like he said nasally. There is a tutorial in the VAT, read it.

Also, I would worry about fixing your breathing/nasal sound before caring to much about emotion because if you start belting it out before that you'll probably hurt your throat.

You're a lot better than most people starting out so there's potential!

Most singers that I've encountered, whether new or old at it, seem to be afraid to sing out, especially when singing into a mic. I 've always said that no one is any good if they can't be heard. Don't be afraid. Sing out like you mean it. Not necessarilly louder but with a stern, determined "umph". Yeah.

This was the first time I had done this by myself (It was a holiday weekend, so alot of people were gone) and the first time that most of the band hand heard, let alone played the song, so we played it a bit slower.

Thanks for your suggestions and support.

Normally I would say it's a HORRIBLE idea to just drop a new song on your team, ecspecially if it's you first time to lead. But, this is one of those songs that's pretty easy to drop on the team on the fly. Any song that only has four chords played throughout the song in the same order is perfect canidate for just learning it on the fly.

You dont sound bad or anything but it sounds like you need to push the notes from your core. IT sounded like you weren't projecting properly. When you project properly it will add alot more emotion and power to the song, especially the higher notes.

Most of these singing terms and techniques are new to me. I have played trombone for the past 8 years, so I know about breath control, but it is slightly different then breath control for singing, I think.
