Anyone know what the LAWS are on performing songs by bands?

Anyone know what the LAWS are on performing songs by bands?
I mean, when I was in the world performing/singing in bars and such... it didn't mattter... but if you're performing Third day, sanctus Real, Casting Crowns...etc... what are the laws on CHARGING/selling tickets... TAKING OFFERINGS??

I never joined the musicians union... but if you are a member does that get you outta royalty payments? To me they're really a rip-off (so I've heard). You pay them for nothing. (So I've heard)

Anyone know?

I would be most interested in knowing this too. I once worked at a theme park that (I believe) paid a fee to be allowed to legally have groups perform there and play others copyrighted material. Could someone be sued over performing a song by Thrid Day without thier permission? Regardless of accepting payment for your performance, could you be doing something illegal?

Will4u2, what musicians union are you talking about?

Wow, this is a really great question; I've often wondered this myself. I wonder if churches should have to have ASCAP or BMI affiliations.
