I want a killer sound system

I would love to put a good sound system into my car but im having trouble figuring out audio stuff.
I understand the subwoofer and amp part but what im having trouble with is the speakers. ive been on newegg.com and there are 2,3,4and 5 way speakers i have a vw golf now and im thinking about getting an old vw bus and i would like both to have good sound

you ought to take a look at mattlsope's thread about car stereo:

http://www.christianguitar.org/forums/t116858/

Speakers are important, but in my opinion:

Deck > amps > Speakers. A good deck & amp setup will sound better with factory speakers than good speakers with a mediocre deck, especially if it's running off deck power.

Anyhow, I'd start there and then see if you have more q's

Yes, although this only works if your factory speakers aren't complete crap. The speakers I pulled out of my truck were actually literally coming apart, and missing pieces.

Agreed, i put a nice pioneer amp (300 dollar) in my F-150 with THE lowest audio package available (when I got it, it didn't even have a cd or tape player) and the sound improvement was great.

yeah my golf is a 1990 and it was driven by several other teenagers (im sixteen-meaning LOUD music)- its taken quite a beating

I put in a new head unit (Pioneer-i guess thats a good brand) - the previous owner also had an aftermarket unit but the volume knob stopped working now that i can turn it up i can hear that most of them are blown

Then you could get new speakers, but no subs until you can put in an amp.

You're driving a 1990 Golf?

If it's a manual, don't spend any money on a sound system. Save your pennies in a "transmission replacement fund."

1990 was the 1.8, or the 2.0 8V?

I'm not sure. Wiki seems to say 2.0. Either way it's a MK II, and thus it's a car with a life-limited transmission...

On the 2.0 8V motors, the transmissions were made of hopes and dreams. The 1.8 and 1.6 transmissions were stouter but only marginally.

Ah, alright. I was unaware there were varying levels of inadequate transmissions....
