| A way to secure your computer/laptop to a piece of furniture. I had a combination-lock that looked like a bike-lock. Laptops especially have a habit of walking off in dorms or apartments with roommates...
Also, that might be too much stuff at first. Coordinate with your roommate (if you have one) and see if you can share things. Also, if you live within driving distance (couple hours) of campus, consider bringing only the essentials for the first two or three weeks, then coming back for more stuff (or having your folks bring it out to you) only if you need it.

My roommate and I have been coordinating I need to email the housing director to see what I don't need/what I can't have.
I'm going to be 7.5 hrs away. Not exactly a go-home-for-the-weekend deal.
I'm kind of confused as to how you can secure a laptop to a piece of furniture. On the other hand, the college I'm going to is a mini (1400 students) Christian University, so I don't think I'll really have a problem with that. I'm not saying "oh, no bad stuff happens on Christian campuses", but I just think it's not really necessary. That's an interesting suggestion though! |

Get something to secure your laptop please. I watched many get stolen. I had a desktop that was not portable.
Its not just the students. Around Christian universities, sometimes druggies, or the homeless, or kids will steal electronics they can carry. A lock lowers the odds immensely. 3 guys on my floor lost laptops that were not locked down. 2 were homeless guys who snuck into the building. The third was a student.
Also, unless your dorm room is huge, that is a way massive list. Have you seen your dorm room? Lamps especially looked overkill to me. Most dorm rooms I have had would be fine with just one lamp, or none if you are fine with overhead lighting.
I would also leave most critical paperwork at home. Chances are after the first week you will not need your social security card or passport.
Also, if you take digital notes, you can almost eliminate the entire school supplies section. Chances are, your dorm floor will have a vacuum and that your room might already have a trash can.

It's not like I can bolt it to my desk... I'm not taking a safe... and as far as I know, there aren't any laptop anti-theft systems. But I really don't think I'll be needing one since it's pretty hard to get into the dorm rooms anyway. And my brothers never told me that they, or I, needed anything like that. And the school I'm going to said they really don't have a problem with theft.
I have been to the campus and have seen a couple dorm rooms. They vary a lot from hall to hall, but I have a general idea of where I'm going. And like I said, I'm not taking everything that's on that list.
As far as the lighting, I need (and have) a desk light. I figure if I'm up late studying and my roommate is in bed, I'm not going to turn on the overhead light. And the floor lamp would be just an alternative source of light if we wanted something a bit dimmer than the overhead. Though, I still need to ask my roommate if she would like to get a floor lamp... we haven't talked about that yet.
I can't type fast, so I'm just going to be taking paper notes. |

| I agree that that is a lot of stuff. does your university have a cleaning service, or are you required to clean for yourselves? if there's a cleaning service, you really don't need any cleaning supplies until it's time to move out, in all honesty. your hall will probably have a vacuum that you can use, so you don't need one of those.
you know, you should pay attention to the guys about your laptop. things get stolen even at christian universities, and it can be tough not knowing your roommate. my roommate and I (we've been friends since high school) shut our door when we weren't around. we trusted the girls we lived with not to poke around in our rooms while we were gone, but even in a dorm that's "hard to get into" people do bring friends in. and of course, doors always fail. our keycard-protected door broke for about a month, and we had to prop it open or be locked out. we could get in, but so could everyone else who didn't have a keycard. it is really better to be safe than sorry.
also, you don't need a floor lamp. a desk lamp should be sufficient. dorm rooms are a lot smaller once you've got all the furniture in them. I think you have a few too many towels, too. where are you going to store four towels? plus, you'll probably need a washcloth or two, or those hand towels, for daily face washing.
as for all the entertainment stuff....don't get loaded down by movies and board games and all that kind of stuff. chances are, the girls you live with will have lots of those things. one of the girls I lived with both years I was away at school had her entire movie collection with her, and we watched movies from it maybe 5-10 times over the entire two years.
I know it's kind of scary (but exciting!) to move away for school, but sometimes our things become our security blanket. don't get weighed down by all your stuff. if you forget anything, it's really easy to drive over to target or walmart and purchase a replacement. also, if you're driving down there be sure you go light. you will acquire lots of stuff over your time away at school, and if you load up your car for the trip there, you will have nowhere to fit everything when it's time to come home for the summer! trust me on this one. =) |

Most desks now at schools have a place precisely for that. It looks like a little mounting bracket that is unused, usually with a round hole about the size of a bike lock cable. If not, a laptop lock cable can usually be secured to any of a number of items in the room. Quote:

| Its a cheap preventative measure. For good measure... here is a quick search of newegg. Schools are always going to say they don't have a theft problem. And the problem is not so much the lost laptop as the lost papers in all honesty. Newegg.com - laptop lock Quote: |

| Since my homework very rarely uses the english alphabet these days, I use a laptop and a wacom tablet. But I would work on your typing speed. To be able to hammer out fluffy papers quick is a definite boon in college. There are a lot of papers that really are just there to be done, and the faster you type, the faster you can get onto the more difficult assignments. I would also try to start moving over as you are able to digital note taking. That way, you can search notes for studying and reference faster.

| I'll update the list after I talk to my housing director. Again, I am not taking everything that is on that list. It's just a first-draft... sort of a worst-case-scenario packing list where I need to take everything (though I'm sure I don't). As for driving to Walmart, it's not likely I'll have a car for college. This year, at least.
The cleaning supplies is something I need to ask the housing director about, I haven't figured out what the situation is there yet. But, I definitely don't think there's a cleaning service there.
I only have 3 movies I'm taking, and maybe one or two games. Nothing major.
The desks there are super basic - nothing nifty on them.
I may be getting a dictation program for transferring notes to my computer and "writing" papers. I'm not sure about that yet though, depends what my dad wants to do.
Our doors lock with keys, not cards, so the doors will pretty much always be locked. You do need a card to get into the building and stuff though. I dunno, maybe I'll get a laptop lock thing. It just seems unnecessary to me, but who knows. |

It just seems unnecessary to me, but who knows. | I lived on the 5th floor at moody and my room got robbed. The guys during spring break drilled a hole through the lock. I know, unlikely you will face that, but there have been enough snatches on campus I have heard of at the 7 schools I have attended to just be cautious. And its one of those items where it is not that expensive.
Most dorms don't have a cleaning service but a closet somewhere in the dorm with a vacuum and a mop and bucket, and a broom. Usually an old industrial vacuum with a red bag and chrome base. If thats there, then that is one less thing to be burdened with taking. Most dorms are fairly shy on space, and a vacuum is a big item.
And the desks I have seen are super basic. Believe me the dorms I have lived in were not too nifty. And a handy, for what its worth. Microsoft office, since version xp has a dictation program built in. It works fairly well, and chances are, you already have it. If you want to use it, start training it now. Personally, I find it easier just to work on typing speed. (and hanging out at cgr will help that.)

That would be a pain.
I don't have Microsoft office on my mac. I could probably get it though. My dad was thinking about dragon - the program he's used for years to do his dictation. I would like to learn how to type faster... I just type weird though. I never really learned how to type seriously. I know how to do it, I've done it, but I just don't like it. I definitely could work on that though. Starting now. |

Naturally Speaking by dragon was one of the pioneers for dictation, but it might be redundant if you need microsoft office. Practice really makes perfect with typing though. And desperation is the mother of invention with it.

| definitely bring some kind of comfy desk chair. I went as far as bringing my office chair, and it has been so worth it.

| Don't count on your room or the dorm being secure. One of the ongoing problems when I was living in the dorm is that people would either just prop open the outside doors, or let anyone in who happened to want in. You would find people in the lounge, laundry room, hallways etc at all hours of the day or night who didn't belong there, and weren't really with anyone who lived there. One friend of mine was raped as she slept in her own room because someone had been let in who didn't belong there and her roommate forgot to lock the door on her way out.
Being a Christian college isn't going to change human nature. A lot of kids are going there because that's what mom and dad want, not because they have any real commitment to Jesus. It was well known that the Christian campus that was a couple of blocks from my college was the place to go if you were looking for alcohol, drugs or sex. The kids there were way wilder than even the frats and sororities.
