What makes Slipknot so popular?

I really don't get how a band like this became this popular. From the songs I've heard, most of them don't seem to be creative. I will admit I have only heard a few songs, but the few I heard (Psychosocial, All Hope Is Gone, and one other) were not really that great. I'm really into the whole metal thing, but I don't understand how they call themselves metal, and don't play it. Their drummer isn't particularly good for a metal drummer, their guitarists (I think they have at least two) don't seem very talented in the big scheme of things either. And the songwriting is fairly bland and unoriginal, musically. Especially the entire first verse of All Hope Is Gone. It just repeats four notes, tremolos, over and over, amid poorly done screaming.

I am in no way trying to offend anyone by putting down this band, just asking how they got popular while not being that great in the big scheme of things.

Same way the many other big-name 'artists' with no talent got popular:

Marketing.

We call these people 'insane.' Although I'm not a huge Slash fan...

Slipknot are about the only band I can't stand to listen to that I would still love to see live.

Send a message via AIM to conceived in fire
They write (relatively) accessible and easy-to-digest music, which is why any number of popular bands (Three Days Grace, Daughtry, Creed, Sum 41, Green Day, etc.) are/were popular.

When you call anything with harsh vocals "screamo", it makes as much sense as calling anything with distorted guitar "heavy metal".

How the hell can you say what bands are talented and what ones aren't? The fact is they write what they want to write and it is totally unrelated to their supposed "talent" level.

I've listened to all of their albums a few times and never heard anything that made me want to go back to them.
