| God of War III I know we don't have a lot of PS3 owners on the site but I figure just about anyone can get some measure of enjoyment out of this. Here's 13 minutes of GOWIII gameplay. Don't watch if you're averse to cartoonish amounts of video-gore. God of War III Direct-Feed Gameplay in High Definition ? G4tv.com

| I've since played the demo I linked to previously. It looks pretty awesome when it's right in front of your eyes (gameplay is sharp as well). I predict this will give FFXIII a run for it's money in March. Good for us video game consumers.

| FFXIII won't be this insanely and needlessly gory... which means I'm going for Final Fantasy. But if bloody death is your thing, then go for it. |

I've been a fan of the FF series since 7th grade (when VII was released [in '97]). Oh, and the blood is totally not a gimmick. The gameplay is strong and very satisfying.

| These new screenshots really demonstrate how much these guys love to play with scale. It was a big part of the other games but this is even beyond those. The detail is stunning. It almost looks like concept art: IGN: God of War III Screenshots (PS3) Full Size 3106729
The first one is the arm of a titan. You can see Kratos clinging on about three quarters of the way down.

I have no idea what their number scores mean but I think the actual review was well done. I think I will probably come to disagree with them most on the camera. I thought the camera work was great in the other GoW games I've played. It was definitely strange at first because so many third person games have a free camera. But with the GoW games you're basically just along for the ride. What that means is that the experience is strictly defined. Outside of the combat (which is as satisfying as it gets) you pretty much do and see what the designers want you to do and see. Some people don't like that. For me what it boils down to is this: whether it's "sandbox" or linear, if the people making the game know and care about what they're doing it's probably going to be good.

| Having played through this game twice now (on normal and hard) I have to say I think it is one of the best action games in recent times. The most obvious thing you'll notice are the visuals. There are certain points where GoW III surpasses every other console game I've seen. Everything is rendered with the in-game engine so there are no jarring breaks in visual continuity. Kratos' character model is perhaps the most highly detailed I've ever seen. And the lighting is sick. When you're in a dark cave and you whip out the blades of exile, their red flames cast all sorts of intricate shadows (which look natural throughout) on the craggy interior surfaces.
Combat, although very similar to the earlier games, is excellent. The magic system has been simplified so that each spell is bound to a weapon. This makes things less confusing. Also there are three new weapons. Some reviewers thought all of them were useful, and I suppose that's true, but I primarily used two and almost never used the others. I will say that the new cestus weapon is amazingly satisfying and quite frankly, once it's fully upgraded I don't see much reason to use anything else. There are also three minor weapons which have a dual function as tools to get around the environment.
The biggest negative is the last part of the game. It gets far too heavy on the narrative and too light on the action. There's a lengthy sequence at the end where you're essentially just running forward the entire time. There is also a valid complaint about the exploitative elements of the game. The violence level is through the roof. One of the trophies you can achieve is to cover Kratos in 500 buckets of your enemies' blood. Seriously, you can go into a large fight as pale as a ghost (hence the nom de guerre "ghost of Sparta") and come out drenched in red. I managed to do this within a few hours just playing normally. And like the previous games they've inserted an interactive sex sequence (the camera pans away and it is entirely optional). There are also bared breasts in a few places. Though most of the time they're on a grotesque harpy or gorgon rather than a comely Grecian female. And of course Kratos is certainly more of a villain than an antihero. It's entirely understandable that any of those three things could turn someone off.
I think the good far outweighs the bad. But that's just me. 5 out of 5.

| I watched a guy play through a couple levels on a Youtube walkthrough a couple weeks ago, and it (almost ) made me want to save up money for a PS3. I was quite impressed for what may be a strange reason- GoW III actually seems to actually get a surprisingly good chunk of the mythology halfway right. That's quite unprecedentated for a video game!
It does look like a lot of fun though, and I love a good brawler. The gameplay reminds me a bit of another greek mythos inspired brawler from last generation called Spartan: Total Warrior. However, I think the first God of War came out before that one, so the similarities likely aren't that surprising. Quote: |

I have a bit of a problem playing a game where my character is cast as the villian. An anti-hero with a good cause or an honorable hero who knocks heads and takes names to get the job done I have no problem with. But a protagonist who unashamedly commits evil deeds? Yeah, I've passed on games before for that very reason. Don't get me wrong, characters like Kratos can be intriguing, and this medium is an ideal medium to explore those kind of personas. They're just not for me, I guess.

After the first half hour (which expertly gets the blood pumping) it's relegated to the background and then forgotten almost completely until nearly the end of the game. Quote: |

| It is a problem. If the story's place in the game was more substantial I would think twice about it. But as far as I'm concerned it's little more than window dressing for the gameplay—which is really the whole point. But yeah, it's very difficult to find anyone to sympathize with in this game. Although there is something of a redemptive moment before it's all over.
