Given how many millions of things fit this, how does this observation bear on this topic?

FWIW,
As I see the issue of swearing come up in the New Testament, mostly by Paul I can't help but think it's for the purpose of avoiding unity and division.

"Do not let any unwholesome words exit your mouth, but rather only that which is edifying and used for the building up of others." Ephesians 4:29

Paul is trying to create a cohesive community amongst his churches and language was often a barrier and misunderstandings who often aloof. I mean you had Greeks and Jews attending the same "potlucks" for goodness sake. Division was an issue and language certainly was too. Much like it is today.

Words can be so powerful and for many of our relationships between each other (as Christians) and outsiders, often times they speak a lot about the faith that we profess to have.
