That depends on the reason that the person is hyperventilating in the first place.

Get a paper bag, not plastic, and breathe into it. The carbon dioxide does something to help you slow your breathing down.

One thing that I have found helpful is to prevent my stress reaction from getting to the point where I'd be hyperventilating. I find that removing myself from the immediate stressful situation and doing some calming exercises helps. For example, if I'm stressing out while cramming for a test, I go outside for a walk with music I like, and force myself to concentrate on the music rather than on my problem.
Another thing I do is intentionally regulate my breathing, taking slow, deep, belly breaths. If it's helpful, imagine that when you exhale, you're breathing out the stress that you're feeling.
I also like taking a break and working on a repetitive, soothing task. I'm one of those people who finds knitting and cleaning bathrooms soothing, but of course, what you'll find relaxing is different.

But it's pretty dependent on what kind of stress you're experiencing. Strategies for controlling stress caused by, say, working on a project that is approaching the due date are different from those for dealing with emotional confrontations, and those for coping with big life changes.

This is dangerous advice. Please do not do this unless you are advised to do so by a physician. You can mess up your acid/base balance and make the situation much worse.

OiBoyz, please refer to the stickied thread near the top of this forum titled Medical Advice

Not to tell you how to do your mod job, but shouldn't that have been something you told the OP? She's the one who was asking for advice.

No. She's basically saying (If I translate correctly): "Don't give medical advice; you're a n00b, not a medical professional."

thanks, that helps

i think the stress i'm feeling probably fits into several different categories.

The reason I'm trying to also stop the hyperventilation is cause the last time it happened, it got so bad that i couldn't talk right for a while afterwords.

Then the post she referred me to should at least mention not giving advice. (it only mentions about asking for advice.)

And what I mentioned, is (or was) part of basic Red Cross first aid training. I haven't taken it in years, so perhaps they've changed it, but it used to be there.

Becky, you gotta take all that stuff to Jesus. Talk it all out with Him. He understands, and He cares. Take it to the cross, sister.

"There is nobody on CGR who is qualified to give you medical advice online."

So... you aren't qualified to give medical advice online...

That was hard.

Context is everything. And the context doesn't say anything about not giving advice. It's about someone asking for advice, and whether the advice they get here is good for them. The correction should have come with the question, not the answer.

I don't mean to pick nits here, but I don't like being corrected when I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't write the posting rules. Just trying to follow them. I am a mod on a fairly large forum (not as large as this one, but we have a few thousand members) and I wouldn't correct the person who wasn't breaking forum rules. I would correct the person who was. (So I guess my earlier disclaimer "not trying to tell you how to do your job" wasn't true. I guess I am back seat modding. I apologize. I shouldn't have done that.}

Sorry for the thread hijack. I'm leaving this topic now.
