Hello From Oregon

I'm new to this forum. I found the site while looking for guitar chords for my favorite songs.

I played acoustic guitar (self taught) years ago, but haven't touched a guitar in around five years. Recently, I've been feeling the need to get back involved in music, and have wanted to buy a guitar.

After much research, I finally decided on one, and ordered it from Amazon. It should be here next week, I can't wait! It's an Alvarez AD60CK, and it's very pretty!

I've been a Christian since I was 15 (1979 - you do the math!)

I'm a huge, though new, newsboys fan.

What part of OR are you from? I used to live near Oregon State, myself.

Greetings from Texas and welcome. I spent 25 years in the north west corner of Or. Most of it in Astoria.

Newsboys is about my favorite group these days... and I too and a relatively new fan. I have seen em twice. Once with Peter and once with Michael at the helm... My band plays a couple of their songs. What a kick.

Where in Eastern OR, if that ain't too personal? I used to live in Halfway (east of BAker, about as "Eastern OR" as you can get!) and in Heppner. I am over between Portland and Salem now. I am heading to Wallowa Lake (near Joseph) tomorrow for a music camp.

haha, I only saw the newsboys once and John James was still the frontman at the time, and I'm not *that* old.

Welcome, looks like a sweet new guitar, I dig the finish.

Well, I'd rather not say, but if you know Oregon, I'm about as far south as you can be with out actually crossing the Cali border (about twenty miles from me) and about dead center east to west.

Hepner? Wow, that is remote. I lived in Boardman for a while. Was born in Burns, and lived a good chunk of the last 25 years in Bend/Redmond.

I love the Wallowa Lake area. Beautiful country. Enjoy!

I'm such a newbie, I didn't get a chance to see Pete. But from what I hear, Michael is doing an awesome job. And from what I've been reading/hearing about him, it was the right choice. If Pete has to leave, I think Michael was the right guy.

Yeah, I'm really excited. I'm a little worried about buying a guitar I've never even touched, but I did a fair amount of research, and talking with musician friends, and I think it might be ok. And actually, after reading the "Worst Advice Ever" topic, I probably couldn't have done better if I had actually played it.

My first guitar was a piece of cr*p classical guitar. I went to the local music store and the guy told me it was what I needed. I guess he didn't think I could handle sore fingers, so I needed the nylon strings. I didn't know anything so I got what the "expert" told me to get. I don't even know how much I paid for it, because I paid for it as a rent to own. So, I probably could have had a Taylor in the long run.

I always had trouble playing it because I have short-ish fingers, and it had a thick, fat neck. I'm hoping that with the thinner/slimmer neck on the Alvarez, I will have better reach.

And yeah, I'm prepared for the sore fingers.

Well, I am bald, but no eyeliner... I really think Tait did a great job. He isn't Peter, but anyone expecting that is being unfair and unrealistic. I can't wait to see them again. And I got my first dcTalk cd (best of) this week to boot.

When I was growing up, my parents lived in New Pine Creek, and their road was literally the OR/CA border... I spend a lot of time in Bend where my brother lives, too.

So will you be playing your new axe at church?

Hi, Kaspar!

Ok... I'm also a HUGE "Weird Al" Yankovic fan. I've met (and hugged!) Al four times. He's a great guy, warm, funny, smart. And a great musician.

I'm female, never married, no kids. Just my dogs. My current dog is little boy we rescued, his name is Dusty. He's a poodle/something.

I live with my elderly parents. My mother is in very declining health, so I moved here to help her out. My dad (step dad, actually) is also having some health challenges.

I work full time at the local hospital, I'm a Unit Secretary, which really isn't a secretarial position at all. I work on the Acute floor and the ER. I have aspirations to one day become a nurse, but it will have to wait until my current family obligations are finished.

I've been a Christian for many, many years... (I guess around 30 now?) and I've been to lots of different kinds of churches: Baptist, Assembly of God, Foursquare, Salvation Army, IMJA. I currently am affiliated with a Nazarene church, but don't often get to actually attend because of my work schedule. I consider myself messianic, though I'm not currently affiliated with any messianic congregation.

I go out to the local men's minimum security prison two evenings a week. On Thursday nights, I show Christian Movies. On Friday night, we have worship/Bible Study. I sing with the inmate chapel band. (I'm kind of a glorified doo-wop girl, but do occasionally get to sing the lead.) They're pretty good. We're currently studying apologetics, specifically the Tactics program from Stand To Reason.

So that's me in a nutshell.

Give the eyeliner some thought... lol You know, I don't know much about Michael, I wasn't a dcTalk fan, but I've heard some of his solo stuff, and the guy has some pipes. Also, he really really loves the Lord, which is most important.

I stand corrected. They are a little further south than I am. So now you know where I live.

I suspect that may be what God has in mind. But I'm going to need to practice. I'm confident enough in my singing, but not my playing.

If you are a Weird AL fan (me too) have you ever heard Apologetix? {ducks flying objects}

They describe themselves as "part Weird Al and part Billy Graham... and they are good! I just saw them for the first time last month. (My band plays a couple of theirs, too...). THey actually know Al, and have even worked with John "Bermuda" Schwartz, one of Al's cronies (and one of the best knicknames ever).

Just sayin'.

I know of them. I don't have any of their stuff. One of my pet peeves about them (being the rabid Al fan that I am) is that they bill themselves as the Christian Weird Al.

From what I gather, Al is the Christian Weird Al. (He identifies himself as such on his webpage) and he's a deacon at his church (Hollywood Church of Christ.) Not that going to church or deaconing makes you a Christian, but I've never seen any indication that he's not a believer.

Didja see Al when he was in Portland for the Poodle Hat tour? I was there! I was in Eugene too. Killer seats for that one.
