| Best actor or actress working right now Yes, there is another thread similar to this right here: http://www.christianguitar.org/forums/t41004/
However, I had my own list I wanted to post and I was told by a mod to start a new thread, so here goes.
Like the last thread, I'm interested to see who you guys think are the best in the business right now. Also, I'd like to see you guys pick the film in which you think each of your choices gave their best performance.
My list:
Daniel Day-Lewis ( There Will Be Blood)
Brad Pitt (toss-up between Fight Club and Burn After Reading)
Mickey Rourke ( The Wrestler)
Leonardo DiCaprio ( The Departed)
Kate Winslet ( Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind)
Tom Cruise ( Magnolia)
Robert Downey Jr. ( Chaplin)
Daniel Craig ( Quantum of Solace)
Naomi Watts ( 21 Grams)
Philip Seymour Hoffman ( Magnolia)
Matt Damon ( The Talented Mr. Ripley)
Viggo Mortensen ( Eastern Promises)
Johnny Depp ( Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl)
Kevin Spacey ( Se7en, although he hasn't done anything really significantly great lately)
Julianne Moore ( Boogie Nights)
Meryl Streep ( Adaptation)
Charlize Theron ( Monster)

| I'm of the opinion there are no great actors, writers, directors, etc. I believe what makes a movie (or even a single actors performance) great, is when all the right ingredients come together. An example I like to use is Seinfeld. I wasn't a big fan, but it was a huge commercial success and still has a large fan base. I don't think the writing was spectacular and I know the cast was not spectacular, but it seemed to be the right cast for that show and the writers/producers etc. got the most out of what they had to work with.
PS, I hope I haven't offended any fans. I think this is true of Friends also. |

That's actually one Johnny Depp film I haven't seen yet(however, I'm really interested considering it's Johnny and Kate Winslet teaming up with Marc Forster). So far, of the films I've seen of his, POTC: COTBP is the film with the best performance I've seen from him. Quote:

I think this is true of Friends also. | That may be true for a number of projects, but I can think of quite a few films where the writing or the directing or the acting is the best part of the film and stands above the rest of the film. In fact, at least one film where the performances were the part of the film that really made it good, while the rest of it was a bit lackluster, with that film being the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Basketball Diaries.

The only person I can think to add is Djimon Honsou (doubt I got his name right), based on Amistad and Blood Diamond. Quote: |

| Sometimes that's true (I agree with Seinfeld to a degree) but other times it isn't. I think Brendan Fraser is a fairly good actor, but the only good movies he's chosen are Crash and The Mummy films (the first two at least).

When you call anything with harsh vocals "screamo", it makes as much sense as calling anything with distorted guitar "heavy metal". |

I still need to see Revolutionary Road though, as I've heard many people say that is Leo at his best. Quote: |

| That's probably true, but I think overall in terms of turning out great performance after great performance, Kate is more prolific. Quote: |

| Check out The Air I Breathe. Fraser does a good job in that too.

| While I'm not sure there are any great actors, I do appreciate a good performance. What I appreciate the most are actors whoa aren't on the A list but just seem to be good in a lot of roles. I like solid supporting actors I guess. Here's a few that stand out to me.
Will Patton...I first liked him in Remember the Titans. And I liked him in the Punisher.
Terrence Howard...(maybe on the edge of A list)...He was good in The Brave One, Crash and more.
Julianne Moore...Ok, maybe another boarder line star, but not a Julia Robers, Reece Witherspoon type. I liked her in The Shipping News, Children of Men, Hannibal etc.
Djimon Hounsou...His biggest role is in Blood Diamonds? He was good in Never Back Down and the Gladiator.
Ed Harris...A Beautiful Mind, National Treasure.
Just a few... |
