Getting a new job

I'm starting to get tired of the pay check methods I usually get at shoprite. When I usually get my paycheck, it's calculated from the week before last. For instance, last week I got a check of $34 that was from a week before last, which was a result of me not working sunday because of my great aunt's funeral. And when I'm out of cash, I have to cash it in the store because of how much money I don't have. Usually if I had more, I'd usually cash it in my debit card, or my savings account in the bank.

I'm trying to convince my parents that I need a waitering job because it'll help me get more tips. That way, I won't have to cash in my checks at my job, and cash them in my debit/bank account, and have some extra money without spending my paycheck money. Plus, memorizing ppl's orders could help me with my memory skills. The problem is that my parents are opposed to me getting a new job, and I'm trying to show them how responsible about this job. And I'm trying to convince them how life would be simplier if I take a job with tips. When I say opposed to it, I mean they talked me down without letting me have a chance to talk. I did tell them after, though. But my dad's response is that 'we should go to counciling about this.' I'm trying to tell them the evidence, and that we don't have to councel about getting a job, right?

I could use some job/parent relation advice on this.

Pretty much every job I've ever had has paid me bi-weekly, and with a one-week delay. It's just the way things are done, usually.

Quick question: Your parents, did you listen to them? What were their reasons?

Sounds to me like the real issue is that you need to learn how to budget your money and figure out ahead of time how much money you will be getting with each paycheck.

I don't think they gave me reasons at all.

That's why I'd like to get a job w/ tips, notably a waitering job. That way, I won't have to cash in my paychecks anymore and will save money in my savings and my debit card.

Another crappy factor is that I heard some friends of mine have more money in their savings accounts than I have in mine. Furthermore, my folks haven't been doing well in finances lately, at least what I've heard and they've told me that I have more money than any other member in my home.

What kind of a bank do you use? I am a Bank of America customer, and everytime I get a check, I simply drive up to one of their ATMs, and deposit the check... the checking account is free. Free to deposit, no monthly fee, no withdrawal fee (from a Bank of America ATM, of course), free bill pay, free debit card, and what I do is I link to an online savings account (ING) that pays me interest (only 1.4% APY right now, used to be 2.5% APY), which is also free. I can transfer money from my free checking, to my free savings, for free. I don't understand why cashing your paychecks would cost you money. Please explain that to me.

Who cares if your friends have more money than you do? And why do they care?

What about getting more hours at your current job?

Keep in mind it depends on where you are a waiter, as well. I was a waiter at a small sushi restaurant not many people knew about, so I only received a share of the tips (and minimum wage). So I wasn't exactly rolling in money. I don't know what people make at bigger restaurants (like Outback or the Olive Garden), but those jobs are pretty stressful and very demanding.

Why being a waiter? Are tips that big of a deal? What about any another job that pays more than your current one? And it really comes down to how many hours you work.

I second this question.

There's your problem right there. Switch to a real bank, like Chase or Bank or America. Especially if you're a student.

Without knowing much about Pacsack Community Bank, that's seems like a harsh thing to say, especially when B of A has a reputation for being one of the worst banks in the US. For example, B of A charges you $5 a month if you have less than $300 in your savings account.

That's why I suggested linking his free B of A account to a free ING savings account. Anyway, the point is that he needs a free checking account, which apparently Pacsack Community Bank isn't offering him.

I have more than that in my SA, so I think it seems BOA may be a good choice.

So I'm looking as the Pascack Community Bank site and apparently they have two checking types. One has no service charges and the other has a $3 monthly service charge.

I'm definitely curious as to hear why Jer isn't using his bank. To me it appears that because his checks are so small he's converting them into petty cash instead of depositing them just because of the hassle (going to the bank or an ATM) to deposit what seems like a meager amount of money.

I have been using it, just haven't been depositing my paychecks for the past few weeks.

Plus, my mom has been depositing my checks for me.
