So really the main difference between your current job and a waiting tables job is that you'd be using the tips for your pocket cash instead of your paychecks, correct?

Do you know what the minimum wage laws are for your state? In some states employers can make you count your tips and in turn you will have that counted against your hourly wage to a rate as low as $2.13/hr.

Correct.

IDK much about the minimum wage laws in NJ yet.

Yes, oftentimes your paycheck after taxes is like $8.00, or something ridiculously low like that. If you were to get a tipped job, and you can drive, I would suggest pizza delivery. I made $12.00/hr minimum, after paying for gas, taxes, etc. Of course it's not a long term job, will destroy your car if you do it too long, etc.

But technically, you could just keep your job, deposit your checks, find a bank account that doesn't cost money, and use a debit card to buy what you want, right? If that is the case, I think you should come up with some better reasons for switching jobs if you're trying to convince your parents that you "need" to get a new job. Money is money, it doesn't really matter whether it's in the form of a check or in the form of cash, does it? Maybe from your point of view it does matter, but it's not going to convince your parents.

Agreed. I think you should just use the current situation to learn some money skills.

That's what I get paid. I thought that was just the typical thing. Besides, there are a lot of people I know who only get paid monthly.

Yeah, the thing about tips is they reduce your hourly rate. I have known many waitresses and while it was nice to have cash money at the end of each shift, they basically had no paycheck. So while it's nice on a day to day basis, it takes a lot more discipline to save up for a big purchase like a down payment on a car or something. Also, it takes a unique skill set to do the job well. I personally could not deal with it. Have you sat in a restaurant and watched someone order their food and when the waiter brings it they say, can I have some catchup and when the waiter brings that they say can I have some mustard and when the waiter brings that they say....you see my point?
