| Squint Entertainment Signs Renowned Independent Pop/Hip-Hop Group, SoulJahz (NASHVILLE, TENN) February 4, 2002-- Squint Entertainment, home to critically acclaimed bands Sixpence None the Richer, Burlap to Cashmere, LA Symphony, Waterdeep and new highly regarded rock band 38th Parallel, announces the addition of San Diego based and admired pop/hip-hop group, SoulJahz (sol-juz; sole-juz), to its already impressive roster.
Already a phenomenon among fans and media, SoulJahz has performed as an indie group at DC/LA, GMA and GMWA and have also appeared on MTV’s pilot of “It’s Your Show.” The group’s “Life,” from its debut, self-titled independent project, was included on ASCAP’s 2000 The Ear compilation CD along with singles by Sixpence None the Richer, Willie Mack and Jeni Fujita. Last November, along with the unveiling of the highly anticipated XBOX game console, Microsoft released “Project Gotham Racing” which featured two songs by SoulJahz.
“SoulJahz has one of the most energetic, unique and polished live acts that I’ve had the privilege to experience,” says Squint Entertainment general manager Hugh Robertson. “The momentum and talent this group possesses has already propelled them into markets that indie acts usually never have a chance to experience.”
“Prior to signing with Squint,” explains group member Joshua Washington, “we spent three years doing our homework on the industry. We’re impressed with how the label approaches business decisions with honesty and how the people are as interested in our lives as much as they are in our music.”
SoulJahz’ trio of personalities, including siblings Joshua (21), Je’kob (20) and Rachael (17) Washington, have all made a commitment to reach youth through a positive message in music. Joshua and Je’kob, both declining multiple college basketball scholarships, and Rachael, a six-year National Tap Dance Champion, collectively express that they are “determined to overcome and revolutionize the messages that society presents to our own generation today.”
The group’s approach to reforming those messages with its music is reflected though the dual significance of “SoulJahz.” The hip pronunciation of “soldiers,” shaped from Ephesians’ verses relating to the new armor of God, also incorporates “Jah,” from another term for God, “Yahweh,” into its name. “Our mission is to ultimately help people find peace through the message found in our music.”
SoulJahz is currently in the studio recording and self-producing its debut project for Squint, scheduled to hit retail shelves June 4. Co-producing with the group is Chris Rodriguez, who has performed with Kenny Loggins, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Faith Hill and more, as well Los Angeles-based producer and hip-hop/Gospel artist Tonex.
Squint Entertainment is a progressive label focused on making modern music relevant to today’s youth culture. Squint Entertainment is a division of Warner Music Group, an AOL Time Warner Company.
