Long Engagements.

Anybody here been in a really long engagement? I have been engaged for over a year now and I still have to wait til Steph and I both graduate college because of Steph's tuition costs and her scholarships go away if she marries.

How did you deal with it? This is driving me crazy. Some days it's not so bad but some days it's down right tortuous.

2.5 years, and 4 years since we got married. One day at a time. Is there a way you can make ends meet if you two get married? I know fafsa wise, steph would probably qualify for some grants once you get married.

15 months exactly for us. Too long in retrospect.

What kind of scholarship goes away if you get married? If anything being a married independent student, your FAFSA will qualify you for more financial aid. That's what happened to us at least.

As Bill said, grants are available for the lowest-income students, and with you both being in school.

You could also weigh the lost scholarship amount against the amount you could bring in to the household being married and under the same roof. If by getting married she loses a $20,000 scholarship, but you have a $40,000 job, you become her scholarship. Make sense?

If it's really killing you, you could consider leap-frogging it and getting married sooner rather than later. So you get married this summer, one of you goes back in the fall, the other works to support both of you, and then next summer you switch places and the other finishes their education. That way you are together, you qualify for more financial aid, but you both graduate within a reasonable amount of time.

My wife and I dated for seven years and was engaged for about eight months before we were married. Those last eight months were the hardest.

well long engagements can be helpful as well as disappointing too... as long engagements can result in a break up too as two people might loose interest in each other...personally i dont believe in long engagements rather we should get married...that would be much much better!

If two people lose interest in each other just by being engaged for a long time, they probably should never have been together in the first place.
