Its kind of like a gaming community made by the gaming company Valve, where you can interact with other users and join servers straight from Steam, and easily hook up with other people and join the same server, etc. (I think) it was originally made for just Valve games, like Half Life, Half Life 2, Counterstrike, etc., but you can add "non-steam" games (i.e, like, anything not bought off Steam or made by Valve) to run on Steam and join servers from Steam right there. Its free, and pretty cool if you're into online gaming.
