Want pedal help

I have been playing guitar for about a year now and I have decided to start looking for an effects pedal because I want to start playing around with different sounds, and my lack of effects has kept me from playing a few things that I really want to start learning. I don't want anything too big and I don't have a buttload of money to spend. I would want to keep it under $150 if possible. Also would like it if it could record to my computer, but that is very optional. any suggestions?

To start with, what are the effects you're lacking that are keeping you from learning these few things you want to learn?

If you aren't looking to play live with your effects, than you might want to look into a Line 6 Toneport. It's recording software that plugs into your computer and provides all sorts of effects and amp modeling.

If you do want to play around with effects and still have the possibility of playing live, you might want to look for a mutil effects board. Like the DigiTech RP or GNX series. After you play around with them for a while and you know what effects you like and don't like, use and don't use, then I'd suggest selling off the multi effects board and investing in higher quality individual effects pedals.

I would not suggest buying a bunch of cheap pedals that you'll never use and can't sell (because they're cheap, and cheap pedals also tend to sound cheap, especially to a more experienced guitarist's ear). I've had quite a few Danelectro FAB effects pedals hovering around my house for years that I never use and can't get rid of.

That makes sense. I will look into those Line 6 things. I think I will get a multi effects board. I was looking around online and found a DigiTech RP 255, which seems like it would work for me and is in my price range.

If you're going multi-fx, I would recommend looking for a POD XT Live. You can find them used for as low as $250, and they're really nice. Most people here (not at all, but most) seem to agree that it blows other modelers completely out of the water. I loved mine
