The Protege' hasn't been made in many years.
I've driven the Elantra, Corolla, Civic and Mazda3.
My personal favorite is the Mazda3. That's not surprising: it's also the most expensive. It's got the most (to borrow the German) Farfignugen.
The other three are distinguished mostly by the more subtle. There's no car on the road with a better maintenance record than Toyota. If you are going to go for the high power version, the Civic SI is certainly more responsive than the Corolla X-R (but in that case, go get a MazdaSpeed 3). The Elantra felt a bit less expensive than the Civic or Corlla; likely because it is. It had a great deal of standard features, and seems a good buy. (I do strongly object to their current commercials however). It's certainly the "most for the least".
The Sonata I'm not nearly as generous with. I felt too detached from the road, too little power (even for its segment), and a generally uninteresting interior. (This was the 07 model, they may have improved)
The now-gone Azera generally impressed me. It's competition was the Avalon; which was better-built, but didn't offer many of the excellent features the Azeria did, nor did the interior seem nearly as upscale. On the down-side; the ride was rather "floaty", which might be familiar to drivers of American luxury cars, but I don't like (I drive a BMW). It was, however, a very tempting car; and at 1-2years old the used ones are likely one of he best values out there.
The Genesis looks exciting on paper: a competitor to the E-class or 5-series. I look forward to driving one.
