Car & Driver: Often correct, but they still love BMW, so what do they know anyhow?

They know who makes the good cars, apparently.

I'll agree they haven't made many FWDs yet.

The Gen coupe seems to be the current darling of the Motor Trend staffers.
After having seen them in person, I can't decide if they are uglier than the original Tiburon or not.
I'm thinking that they are...

Matt, both the (evoX) and the genesis use the 4B11T which is based on the Hyundai "World" motor that was developed jointly with Mitsubishi and a few others.

Block/head/pistons/rods/crank/etc are all similar, but a bit different. The Hyundai parts are a lower grade than what mitsubishi is using. For instance the rods in the Hyundai are powder sintered whereas the mitsubishi's are forged. Mitsu's pistons are made by Mahle and have an oil reservoir under the dish like the porsche turbos. Hyundai uses a cast piston that is not really any stronger than their passenger cars. The mitsu 4b11 has more webbing (stronger) and on and on.

It doesn't necessarily mean that the Hyundai isn't a great platform to start with, because it is great. It just means that the Mitsubishi is stronger out of the box. It also doesn't mean that evo crank/rods/pistons/block couldn't go into a Hyundai.

The head is different in that the flanges for the intake & exhaust manifolds are different. Manifold & turbo swapping is simply not going to be happening.

technically I'm on my 4th 4g powered vehicle, but one of them I never had the title signed into my name and I just parted it out.

but yeah, my dad has the talon now, and i'm still keeping #461

The Protege' hasn't been made in many years.

I've driven the Elantra, Corolla, Civic and Mazda3.

My personal favorite is the Mazda3. That's not surprising: it's also the most expensive. It's got the most (to borrow the German) Farfignugen.

The other three are distinguished mostly by the more subtle. There's no car on the road with a better maintenance record than Toyota. If you are going to go for the high power version, the Civic SI is certainly more responsive than the Corolla X-R (but in that case, go get a MazdaSpeed 3). The Elantra felt a bit less expensive than the Civic or Corlla; likely because it is. It had a great deal of standard features, and seems a good buy. (I do strongly object to their current commercials however). It's certainly the "most for the least".

The Sonata I'm not nearly as generous with. I felt too detached from the road, too little power (even for its segment), and a generally uninteresting interior. (This was the 07 model, they may have improved)

The now-gone Azera generally impressed me. It's competition was the Avalon; which was better-built, but didn't offer many of the excellent features the Azeria did, nor did the interior seem nearly as upscale. On the down-side; the ride was rather "floaty", which might be familiar to drivers of American luxury cars, but I don't like (I drive a BMW). It was, however, a very tempting car; and at 1-2years old the used ones are likely one of he best values out there.

The Genesis looks exciting on paper: a competitor to the E-class or 5-series. I look forward to driving one.
