It's more of a fantasy, but Black, Red, and White by Ted Dekker. Awesome books, plus they're Christian.

I've heard a lot about Ted Dekker, but I've never read his books. What genre are they?

Anywhere from fantasy to thriller. Also, if you like adventures, I reccomend the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz.

A Confederacy of Dunes has been my favorite summer read ever. It's a laugh riot.

As long as one has a good attention span, Dumas's stories are excellent. The Count of Monte Cristo has already been suggested; I've read The Man in the Iron Mask and The Knight of Maison-Rouge which were great. The latter is on the shorter side.
