I'm so sad. I need to tell someone about this so I can get it off my chest
Today, my mom was mowing the grass and ran over a bunny nest, the TINY babies got scared and scattered. She called me to help her put them back in the nest. So we're trying to round them up, and manage to get one back in. We try to put another one in with it, but it hops off and goes under the fence into our back yard where our dog and three cats were. The dog saw it and promptly snatched it and ran off. We yelled at the dog and he dropped it, but it was too late... well, kind of. He must have crushed some bones because the poor thing couldn't hop anymore, it just flopped around. I scooped it up gently and carried it back to the nest, laid it in there and pulled the grass down over the opening; looked at my hands and saw the poor thing was bleeding.... I looked at it, it looked so pitiful! I feel so bad. It was so innocent and scared...
After that, we gave up on trying to put them in the nest and simply tried to put them all TOGETHER so that they could stay warm and such (they were tiny, tiny, tiny things). Only found two, there were four in all - including the one the dog got. So I put those two together in the shade in the garden, so they wouldn't fry in the sun. Tried to find the other one, but didn't see it anywhere. Btw, the garden was smallish and about ten feet away from the nest.
Later on (this evening), I went out to get some coffee and saw the mother bunny sitting in the front yard. I felt so bad!! I just think about how confused she must be... where did her babies go?
Got home, went inside... dog had to go out to do his nightly duties, so I put him outside. Went upstairs. My mom noticed the cats were going NUTS looking out the windows, and went to check it out. The dog found another of the babies, and was doing what dogs do. The cats were interested since they had heard it screaming. Apparently it ventured into the yard and he found it.... agh. I know my dog doesn't know any better, i mean, he's a terrier so that's even what he's SUPPOSED to do, you know? But I'm still just really upset. I have a big heart for animals, and I HATE it when they get hurt or mistreated, even if it's just part of life.
LATER (about 10 minutes ago), I was watching tv and heard the now-familiar sound of a baby bunny screaming. Looked outside, saw a stray cat looking back at me with a wiggling bunny in its mouth. Three in one day!!!!!!! When there were only four to begin with!!!! I just.... ugh. I feel terrible. I know it's not my fault or anything, but my heart is breaking!
I wonder where the fourth one is.... do you know if the mother will find it? Do bunnies communicate with each other like other animal families do? Sorry to share such a depressing story but like I said, I had to get it off my chest.
