The beauty of this project is, and I believe Skeeter Dan mentioned this already in the sticiked thread, that these aren't meant to be perfected, finished pieces. The main idea is just to challenge yourself to write every day and get your creative gears going.

I've enjoyed everything you've posted so far and I hope you'll keep trying your hand at it

Here's today's entry. I actually like this one more than any of the others I've done so far.

Along For The Ride

I pocket the subway token
and before I know it
I hop the turnstile and run.
Jimmy and Frankie are up ahead
cans of spray paint in hand.
Jimmy grins over his shoulder
and I almost fall in.
Silver chains dangle
from his black leather jacket.
They jingle as we run
just like in the Tom Petty song.
Tattoos snake their way
through the scars and needle tracks
that conceal his snow white arms.
He calls my name in between drags
from the generic cigarettes
he swiped from his Mom's purse.
My heart swells and I know
our time has finally come.
Tonight, history will be made
legends will be born down here
in these musty tunnels.
Myths will be etched
into the subway walls.
young punks will recite the tale
around fires that burn in rusty drums.
Jimmy is a god among men
his exploits know no end
and tonight, oh baby, tonight
I'm along for the ride.

Thanks...I appreciate it. I have never been a huge fan of poetry. I enjoy reading it...sometimes...and I occasionally try my hand at it. I confess that it's not something I'm comfortable with yet.

Hugs & Kisses

Sandpaper rubs her cheek
raw as she sobs goodbye,
burglarizing his touch
under August moonlight.
Leery eyes observe the
scene playing out by the
rusty garden gate. Mom
and Dad say she's too young
and they ought to know, they
welcomed her one April
night when their friends danced
cheek to cheek, twirling in
the gym at Senior Prom.

physiognomy

tempests roar
behind her eyes
emotions toss to and fro
circumnavigating the spaces
between her furrowed brows
angry autumn sun
on her cheeks
portends the coming fury
silent, pursed lips betray
the deluge of obscenities
that baptize and christen me
her latest victim

Morning After

My Frosted Flakes are soggy
after just five minutes
so I slurp them up,
take a bite from the burnt toast
Dad left on his way out the door
and wash it all down
with the last of the orange juice.
Last night's events
(my coming out party)
recycle in my mind.
Adrenaline still surges
at the thought
of imminent greatness.
Jimmy and Frankie picked me
from the dozens that gathered
and milled around,
scouring the alley for a fight.
I didn't let them down
I had their back
even when things got hairy.
Frankie gave me a smoke
and Jimmy grinned
when he handed me
his Dad's old .38.
"You'll know what to do,"
he whispered with
sweat and booze clinging
to each and every word.
Now I sit at breakfast
savoring my first kill
baby steps into their world.
I put my bowl into the sink
"Next time," I say to
no one in particular,
"I'm getting the Cap'n Crunch."

With All My Heart

Beethoven to his Immortal Beloved
Napoleon to Jospehine
Jack to his doomed Joy
Sid to Nancy
me to you
an endless progression
emotions etched onto the page
in blood if need be
feeble attempts to express
just what occurs inside
every time we touch
a sharing of
heart
mind
soul
captured
for all eternity
contained
in words you'll read
over and over
then hide away
in an old shoebox

309 Cunningham Street

stand in the void
a blip on the cosmic radar
straddle the dead zone
between here and now
fight circumstance
one eye on the prize
the other blinded
severed at the optic nerve
perhaps that's the source
of the never-ending headache
that jolts me awake
each and every dawn
then wrestles me to sleep
in the witching hour
thoughts and memories
clash inside, like Athena
awaiting Hephaestus' axe
perhaps they will
spring forth and ride
off into the horizon
as I lay down to die

I really like this latest one (and not just because I'm a sucker for a nicely placed Greek myth reference ).

Keep on keepin on, Mr. Modlin.

Last Day Of School

bright yellow monster
vomits out the kiddies
one by one by one
battle-worn satchels
dig trenches through
freshly manicured lawns
the centipede grass
seven thousand miles
and a hundred years
removed from home
all along the trenches
charcoal smoke wafts
up and up and up
the first sign of summer
and a reminder that
freedom only lasts
seventy-five days a year

Office Assistant Needed

somewhere, in the mess upstairs
the clerk runs to and fro
desperately trying to file
the day's activities away
breakfast conversation
is tossed into the bin
with sixth grade recollections
my coffee and toast
now sitting in the darkness
huddled together
on the bleachers
Sadie Hawkins Dance, 1982
the honey-do list
jotted down for me
on Precious Memories stationary
buried under a mountain
of confetti, courtesy
Fourth of July Parade, 1993
most importantly
your sister's new phone number
on the day of her child's birth
is drenched in beer
laying on the coffee table
of the Red Roof Inn
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Spring Break, 1988

Beside Myself

I got a funny feeling
not really sure
where it comes from.
Someone looking
over my shoulder
sighing with each
and every word.
My biggest fan
and worst critic
all rolled up
into one.

Whoa, I like this one quite a lot. So simple, but it works really, really well.
