In short, I never understood references to music as chaotic.
Personally, I thought it was brilliantly structured. The arrangements gave the impression of chaos and noise, but on careful listening very interesting structures emerged. That's what I mean when I say "hard to listen to." It's certainly not easy-listening music and it didn't instantly appeal to me in the way that their first album did, but I enjoyed it more and more when I listened to it closely.

This review captures some of what I mean.

I read that article as far as the Slayer and Meshuggah comparisons.

Um...he wasn't comparing their sound to them in any way whatsoever. If that's what you got out of it, then you may have some issues with reading comprehension.

I thought it was cool how they were called the 'Sonic Youth' of our time, in the article.

So intelligence insults are part of CGR community now. Interesting.
I didn't say thats what I got out of it. What I got out of it is that the author of that article thinks The Chariot's 29 minutes of noise are akin to Slayer's Reign in Blood. Reign in Blood is not noisecore, it is one of the most influential thrash metal albums ever.
Comparing The Chariot's complexities to that of Meshuggah is just absurd.

You're still bringing up genres. The reviewer is NOT comparing The Chariot to Slayer in terms of genre. Yes he said "calculated blast of chaos similar to Slayer's 'Reign In Blood'", but he never compared The Chariot to thrash metal or Slayer to metalcore.

The comparison to Meshuggah is not "absurd". The reviewer was not comparing the complexity of riffs between the two bands. He was saying, that even though the album seems noisy (brazen and choppy in his own words) there are far more complexities under the surface. I will repeat, he was not comparing the complexity of the riffs and lyrics BETWEEN THE TWO BANDS.

I'm sure Skeeter was not insulting your intelligence, he was just pointing out that it was quite obvious the bands were not being compared to each other, as to genres, and who's riffs and lyrics are more complex.

Sorry if I offended you, it was meant to be a joke. Evidently my sense of humour has gone downhill recently...

Obviously Slayer is not noisecore; the comparison there was in regards to the length of the albums. The Meshuggah comparison is not meant to say that they are equally complex, just that there are layers to The Chariot just like there are layers to Meshuggah. Neither comparison was meant to say that they sound similar to either band.

That said, I agree that The Chariot is not as complex as Meshuggah. But that's not what the review was saying.

It's easy to misinterpret things when you're just reading text. Maybe just try to be a bit more clear that you're joking?

Still, Slayer and Meshuggah should not be in the same sentence as The Chariot.

I'm listening to this on LaLa right now. I'm pleasantly surprised, I'm not a big fan of their other albums, but this one is pretty dang tasty. In reference to other comments in the thread, I actually hear more of a Coalesce influence in it than Botch....

My friend, who has to tell the chefs at buffalo wild wings to "try to burn his mouth" in order to get something truly hot, agrees that it has a very intense kick and that it is definitely not a n00b sauce.

I'm hoping you realize I was making a humourjoke.

You remain the only person I know of in the whole world who says "humourjoke" and I really think it's awesome.

Floridians are lame. Myself included.

Also I haven't got this yet but I listened to most of it while it was on their page and was most certainly pleased.
