| Doesn't look like there are any pugilists here. I personally find boxing to be a lot of fun. When ithomas was just a wee lad I had a pretty good set-up at the house and had a few regular guys that would come over and spar once or twice a week. I miss those days. If ithomas keeps working he should be able to work me over pretty good in a few months as he is nearing his athletic prime and I am well past mine. I look forward to the challenge. |

#3 | | It's over 9000!!!!!!! | Since this is a slower forum, I'll just resurrect a semi old thread instead of starting a new one.
Are there any other boxers out there?
I've just started, got myself a little speed bag/heavy bag stand. I enjoy the physical contact of working them both over. Gives a different feeling from jogging or biking or some other form of exercise.
Does anyone have any pointers for a beginner? Or maybe some good boxing sites? I've looked around a bit and picked up some small pointers. Proper stance, basic hitting techniques for the heavy and speed bag.
The speed bag is both my favorite, and most hated of the two. I think I need a better bag and hanging apparatus thingy. I have gotten a better swivel, which helped out a bit. But between the bag and the loose stand, it seems to fight me. The hardest part for me has been taking it slow. Learning to crawl before walking. But there is something nearly hypnotic about it.
Anywho, just sending out a hello and some questions to everyone. |

| Boxing is awesome, I'm really just getting into it. I do like MMA more but both sports are great. The whole argument about which is better is kinda dumb, they're completely different- I appreciate things about both.
In Muay Thai there are similar strategies imported from boxing, thanks to my instructor who is a huge boxing fan and knows an incredible amount of history regarding the sport. But obviously they are also radically different in many ways as well. Anyway, I love pugilism.
Anyone watching the Hopkins/Jones 2 fight tonight? I don't have a particular favorite, but I think it will be fun to watch, given the rivalry.

| Boxing as a sport to participate in is awesome. As a spectator sport? I've been seriously disenfranchised for years...pretty much ever since MMA hit the scene. I love Roy Jones though, I've seen him make other guys just look silly. He can be so composed under pressure and is so fluid with his motion it can be a thing of beauty.
I have a couple ideas that I think would help boxing.
1. Les weight classes. There are currently about 17 divisions recognized by most of the major sanctioning bodies and they only span about 4 lb apiece. What I have seen over the 30+ years I've been a boxing fan is you often see periods of time where you have 4-5 good fighters between say, 160 and 180 but because there's about 4 weight classes there and a half dozen sanctioning bodies they never fight each other until they are old and they just need a pay day. Also, I think there's something interesting about watching guys use strategy to over come a size and/or strength disadvantage. I would have weight classes span about 15 lb.
2. Shorter fights. Non title MMA fights are 17 minutes including the two breaks between rounds. An 8 round boxing match is about 32 minutes including breaks. If it's not a great fight, that's a long time to watch hoping something exciting will happen. |

| I'm a huge boxing fan! I really like watching it as well.
For beginner boxers I would say don't underestimate the importance of your footwork. You can punch with friggin' monster truck force, but if you don't the speed or agility you're going to be going up against some serious odds. Just look at the Kelly Pavlik and Sergio Martinez fight. |

| Boxng is the ONLY sport I enjoy watching. I don't think it's silly to favor it over MMA; one is a sport and the other is a brutal, uncivilized gladiatorial display.

First, over the course of an 8 round fight a boxer will take a far greater number of punishing blows to the head. Secondly the standing eight count is a dangerous rule. It allows a boxer to give the appearance of being ready to fight after he has suffered a concussion or some other event which should stop the fight. Third, while there is much blood in MMA it's only surface cuts. Who cared about a surface cut? I've lost gallons of blood at work and recreation. And on a non safety issue, the outcome of the fight is rarely in question in MMA unlike in boxing. I understand boxing really well, and it seems I disagree with the judges about a third of the time. So do the fighters and crowds. There's almost always controversy over decisions in boxing. This is not the case with MMA.
*edit* I don't think it's silly to favor boxing over MMA either. It's a personal choice. It was your comments about MMA simply being a brutal, uncivilized gladiatorial display. Quote:

| I try to combine the two. I just put the heads of nine irons in my gloves before I lace up and then commence with the face smashing most promptly. |
