| You play them by waving your hands, basically. They are notoriously impossibly hard to play in tune, although there are a number of real virtuousos out there. They're not really that obscure, but don't get one unless you have good relative pitch and are willing to put a lot of practice into it, as otherwise it will just sound aggravating. Get a flanger or strong chorus pedal instead if you want something kind of like the sound without the effort, or additionally an eBow (though this takes almost as much work to sound good).
