Need some advice on Cabs

I ahve had the original cab for my Trple XXX peavey head for 2 years now. But, my cab is a little small (two twelves) and I want to upgrade to some four twelves. Anyway. I have been scouring musicianfriend trying to find something cheap (under 300ish) and there are quite a few possibilities. I was looking at some behringers and some others.

But, what should I take into account when looking? I know I need to konw if it is a mono or stereo and the resistance and whatnot, but is there anyhting else? Anyhting I should steer clear of? Does the brand make that much of a difference? I know a Marshal would sound great, but my price range is quite small....

Brand makes no difference... speakers do... look at brands of speakers... Almost all the major amp brands use either Celestion or Eminence and sound almost identical sitting next to a cab with the same speakers...

Take a look at Avatar cabs...

Under $300, I would say the old Behringers, or maybe an old 5150 cab are your best bets.

Hey Taylor...

I've got a fender cab that I don't use. Its carpeted, but it has the fender grill(e?) cloth. It has 2 16 ohm Celestion V30's in it...they are decent speakers...

If you could run it in conjunction with your cab (meaning using your 2 speakers, and the 2 speakers in the cab at the same time), I could let you mess with it some...and possibly buy it?

Go avatar. Speakers, and cab material matter. The plate on the front, not so much.

I like a 2x12, because like the bazooka guy in world war 2, yeah, you get to use it, but you also have to carry it.

Have you thought of getting better speakers for your 2x12.

I had a marshall 2x12. I have an avatar 1x12, and a 2x12. Both put the marshall to shame.

I also reccommend avatar cabs, dunno if they make a sub 300 cab. It will be a bit more than that if memory serves. Theyre site is down ATM. However if you get a little more budget look into vader cabs they will bring out the best in your Triple XXX.

BillS's suggestion of a speaker change is also something you should look into. Changing out the speakers can make a huge difference. I would try some C90's or even better some Eminence swamp thangs.

As far as gigging with a 4x12 Vs. 2X12, I like the 4x12 because though theyre heavier to lift out of the trailer you can roll them everywhere else standing. Some 2x12's have casters but not that often then you have to bend over to roll it, or some have a suitcase style setup with a grip on one side and rollers on the other which is still kind of a pain IMO. Though what everyones back can put up with is subjective of course
