Does this count as Cars material?

I accidentally stumbled across some of these Youtube videos. I am completely sold. I am picking up a cheap electric as soon as I can to see if it is as much fun as it looks like.

If I do get into it, I'm totally gonna build a badass nitro car.

Thoughts?

That makes more sense to me than cooking a real set of tires. I approve.

I don't hold drifting to be a valid form of motorsports, but it can be fun.

That looks like a more economical way to drift though, although something tells me it's still not cheap.

Why not? It takes skill, well tuned vehicles, and a high level of performance from the the car and the driver.

real sports (and motorsports) are won or lost by hard, unbiased things like being first, or having the fastest time, beating the clock, etc.

Scoring an automotive event like gymnastics or figure skating diminishes the legitimacy of the "sport" in my eyes. The problem is, there's really no unbiased way to judge drifting.

Having seen it in person, yeah it looks cool. Having doriftoed many cars in the past, yeah it's fun to do.

Is it racing? Not to me.

Does racing = motorsport then?

I'm just curious. I don't equate it to racing either, but I don't think that precludes it from being a motorsport.

Indeed, it depends on what you'd call a motorsport. Where does the following lie?

I suppose it's a competition of some kind... but I'd hesitate to call it a sport. Motorhobby?

Exactly. If they were to come up with a way to quantify things, and come up with a scoring system from that, things would be different.

As long as the winner is determined by a "Ooh, I just like how driver x did that turn with more "style" than driver y" idea I'll never have any interest in the "sport."

Well, sorta. I did notice a Solstice won last season, so I'm glad about that. Gotta get the Kappa platform in the spotlight, after all.
