OK, total newb question...

I've been thinking about trying to sing. It's hard to get a gig if you can't sing, and I don't know anyone who can and therefore I haven't really tried for any gigs. So I want to at least try to learn to sing, hopefully it's not something you're born with. Where do I start? I have no idea.

I also want to be able to sing and play guitar at the same time, any practice tips for that?

Since ur a newb, here's my 2 cents:

To help ur voice become better, try joining select choir or regular choir.

Also, try to find a vocal teacher who lives nearby ur neighborhood. Depending on the teacher, hopefully you'll learn about breath support, placement, form, etc.

Update:
I think I'm going to muster up the courage and sing while I play guitar in my band. There are usually about 3 or 4 singers, so if I'm turned down a little bit until I'm comfortable, I should be fine. My Dad knows a teacher, so we're talking about it.

IMO the two biggest things with singing are 1) breath control and 2) confidence. Obviously, you need to be on pitch, but a lot of the time, if you're off it's because you're not breathing right. Then sing like you mean it. Being wimpy when you're going for a note will also put you off key. Everything else will come with practice.

Check out the VAT. Read up on breathing in there. But don't discount a teacher, vocals is one of those things you really can't learn on the internet.
