Immersion, immersion, immersion.
Until the time comes for you to have that opportunity, however, there are things you can do to help. It sounds like you're doing some of them. But the name of the game here is large amounts of
comprehensible input. You acquire a language best by hearing it and
understanding what you're hearing. If you don't understand what you're hearing, then it is really not helping you that much. Try listening to something that you have the words to, and read along with it. Repeat this several times, then take away the words. Repitition is important. Listen to things over and over until you understand them. Watch things that may have accompanying pictures or videos that will help you understand what is being talked about. Listen to something once through, and write down the words you
do understand. Look at those words, guess what the passage/song/conversation may be about and what other words you might expect to hear in such a topic. Then listen to it again. And again. And again. Until you understand it.
It is a process and it is frustrating and it takes a long time. Immersion in that language speeds things up considerably, but even then, it is a process and it is frustrating and it takes a long time. The more you work at it, the better you'll be. Listening comprehension is still the thing I have the most trouble with, and I was a Spanish major in college and my job is a bilingual position and I have to speak Spanish in a professional setting just about every day at work. Keep working at it, take satisfaction in your progress and accomplishments, and when it gets frustrating, remember that it is worth it and you are doing fine.
