Well I dug out the old JVC record player of my parents, it looks like I can have it, or use it for an indefinite amount of time. I set it up and put a record on it and realized the needle is destroyed. So I have ordered a new needle for it and i'm picking up the Y-Adapter on Wednesday.
But, now comes the question of what software program to use. Does anyone have any particular recommendations? I've heard quite a bit about Audacity.
Also, my computer is a Mac OS X 10.5.2 (Leopard).

Audacity is decent, but if you're on a mac, go for Garageband since it's already on there..

audacity is supposed to be able to automatically split the tracks from the LP

Like.. take a stereo track and split it into Left and Right?

Or do you mean editing it so that the individual songs are separate?

Sorry, but in recording the word "tracks" can refer to 3 or 4 different things..

Sweet, i'll just use Garageband. I didn't think that it would work, but it would be ideal, especially since I am already familiar with it.

You should just be able to copy/paste each song into a new audacity file..

ok, i see how to do that, although audacity is supposed to be able to do it for you....anyone know how to do that?.,..as well as automatically cut of the end so i don't have to sit beside the turntable and remove the needle the second the groove repeats

Audacity is great, but it's a free program... I don't even know of any pay programs that automatically split songs like that... Where did you hear that it would automatically split them for you?

What's wrong with just cutting and pasting into a new track?

Yeah, this is very prevalent with audio stuff, unfortunately. So many different names for the same thing or the same name for a number of different things, compounded by manufacturers intentionally confusing marketing is one of the most frustrating things about recording gear

I totally understand wanting to be lazy though

FWIW, the technology is there to do it (it's easy for software to detect breaks in song etc), but there really isn't a whole lot of market for it... it's really only needed for people converting records/tape and since copying/pasting works just the same..

No, I don't think it was the bad advertising, i've heard more than once that Audacity can automatically split tracks as well.

And I think i'm going to download Audacity as well. With Garageband, i'll have to start a new project for every song, and that will just become annoying.

I bought my adapter today, it is a Stereo Y-Adapter, not mono. I wasn't quite sure which one I needed.
So I just need to wait for the new needle to come in.
