Where'd you get your chops?

hi guys, I'm new around here and i was interested to hear what keyboardists have to say...

I'd like to know how people on here learnt to play and, if you can do jazz improv type stuff, where did you learn licks and all that type of stuff? From a teacher/s? Listening to CDs and using your ear? Sheet music? From sharing with fellow keyboardists? I'd love to know...

I personally could play by ear from a young age and hours whitted away on a little keyboard making up music and listening to the patterns on the keyboard helped me. I had a few lessons here and there but didn't persist. i ended up doing a Diploma of Contemporary Music when I finished school and there I learnt a lot of the theory I'd already picked up by ear so it came quite easily. I picked up a few things here and there by watching other keyboardists. I'm now keen to really get better but don't know where to turn to do so.

Where did you get your chops?
