Rebec

The Rebec is a medieval era parent to the violin. It is from a family of 3-stringed instruments common in early England, Italy, the Middle East, etc. One of my goals for 2009 was buy a violin for my 38th birthday to learn. Well, the Rebec has caught my fascination.

Here is a link that talk about the Rebec in a little more detail than I currently know:

I have a friend that makes music instruments and is pretty good with wood working who has agreed to try his hand at making one for me. I know I can buy them complete, or as kits, but I am in no rush since my birthday isn't until August.

that's pretty fascinating! I would love to hear how it sounds if/when your friend makes you one. do you know if there are any recordings currently available, perhaps with period-style artists?

(and welcome to the other stringed instruments forum. =))

I have always loved the sound of the violin. It was one of those instrument I had always wanted to learn to play, but I just never followed through with trying. Now the music bug has truly bitten me, I am going to dive in. I am giving myself some more time with the bass guitar, though, before taking another stringed instrument. I don't want to distract myself too badly.

My Rebec is almost finished. Yay. The maker needs to use new tuner pegs. The ones he bought aren't working correctly.
