The Rebec is a medieval era parent to the violin. It is from a family of 3-stringed instruments common in early England, Italy, the Middle East, etc. One of my goals for 2009 was buy a violin for my 38th birthday to learn. Well, the Rebec has caught my fascination.
Here is a link that talk about the Rebec in a little more detail than I currently know:

I have a friend that makes music instruments and is pretty good with wood working who has agreed to try his hand at making one for me. I know I can buy them complete, or as kits, but I am in no rush since my birthday isn't until August.
