College Survey: Workplace Racism

Hey all. I need to do a survey for my professional writing class concerning workplace racism. I have below a short survey, should only take a few minutes to fill out. If you want to PM your responses to me, that's fine, or just post your answers in this thread, it's up to you, but the more the merrier. I'd like to say, thank you in advance too

I'm a middle aged white man so my answers to your survey would probably not be too helpful so I'll just add some comments about racism I see at work. I haven't seen any racism from management as far as promotions, vessel assignments, etc. but many of the rank and file white guys that I work with are racist.

Earlier today my deckhand was telling me that Ira (our crew coordinator who is black) sure "takes care of the brothers and sisters". I take this as a racist comment because I have worked with Ira for a long time and have never seen him show favoritism to anyone. This same deckhand was telling me how all the riggers (men with the job of handling cargo on the boat) are lazy slobs--all they do is eat and watch TV. It so happens that all the riggers we have had on this boat are black.

The night Obama was elected some one announced on the VHF (like a CB radio for mariners) that we now have a n%&ger in the white house.

While unloading the boat at sea recently I was getting frustrated with the crane operator who was making the job difficult. Our engineer asked if the crane operator was .....some racial slur I wasn't familiar with so I said whats that. The engineer stuck his head out the door so he could see the crane operator and then said "yep, he's black". I was kind of dumbfounded. I guess black men can't run a crane as well as white men?

Not all white guys working in the Gulf of Mexico a racism, but there's plenty of it.

Yea... I work in a factory and we're in a blue collar culture here. Only one black person working the floor, and he's well liked and everyone agrees he's one of the hardest workers. So ironically, there's plenty of racism flying around. I don't get it, but some of these people are hard core racist. That being said, I believe management is treating him as anyone else, regardless of skin color. Its just the labor force who seem to be off the deep end.
