There are 4 basic scale types:
major - major third interval from root to third, minor third interval from third to fifth
minor - minor third interval from root to third, major third interval from third to fifth
augmented - major third interval from root to third and from third to fifth
diminished - minor third interval from root to third and from third to fifth

From all I know pertaining to all music based on half and whole steps, all of the many dozens of different scales are derived from those 4 types.
I could be wrong.
