Recording advice!

How do you guys mic your kick drum? I used a standard vocal mic with the mixer set at "flat" values. It would pick it up a little if I used a very solid kick (i.e. stopmed on the pedal).

Just curious how you guys do it./....

I use one of these as a mic. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/E602/

The key to kick drums is placement... minor changes in the direction of the mic will make drastic changes in the sound of the recording. For instance, positioning the mic so that it's inside the kick, but pointing at the shell will produce a boomier sound, but rotating the mic to point more at the beater will give you more of a pointed sound.

Check the specs on your vocal mic though. There probably won't be much low freq response as some of the dedicated kick drum mics.

I'm not a big fan of the sound of a mic inside the drum, but for lots of people, it works. The vocal mic isn't ideal, but I've heard decent recordings done with a SM57 as a kick mic. It's all about listening and moving the mic till you find the spot that sounds best to you.

You could also play with some EQ to see how it changes your results. Where you put your mic also depends on an extent about the style of music. Different style call for different kick sounds.
