Looking into becoming Irish...

My wife and I are of Irish descent. Me from a very long time ago, her grandfather is an Irish Citizen. However, he did not claim citizenship prior to a critical point, so it looks like we will have to go through emigration and see about naturalized citizenship.

My wife is a nurse, by this point in my life, when this would be viable, (a couple years, I am assuming for planning/paperwork) I will probably be a professor.

Now... How would one go about this. We are looking primarily at moving to the North part of the Republic, though if it were easier, it might be worth going Near Derry in North Ireland.

Anyway, we have started contacting people and are making plans. My curiosity is this...

Do any of you have any ideas how difficult this will be? I know how tricky it is to move to the US. Is there anything I should watch out for.

Can you stand a round in a Pub?

can you sing?

can you argue for days over an utterly useless point of law that ceaced to be relevent 12 generations ago?

you'll fit right in!!

if you're investigating already then you'll know that there are two seperate nations involved your post.

(BTW its NorthERN Ireland)

They're TALKING about tightening up the UK's immigration policies, but I THINK that the republic is pretty open, especially with medical occupations.

what you be a prof in? (and is there a Uni in your chosen area to look for a position in?)

Yep, I do. And my ancestors probably kept the fight going on the continent here and told tales for 400 years. I will be honest, going to Ireland and road tripping it was amazing. Also, the people, culture, etc looked like how I wanted to raise a family.

I went to both this year. However, I think we would stay on the Republic side most likely. However, her license transfer would be easier on the UK side of things. I will be honest. I liked Inishowen a lot better.

Sorry, it gets confusing, especially since my wife's family lives in the republic, farther North than Northern Ireland.

That they are, and the pay looks good as well.

Ancient Near Eastern Studies, AKA Old Testament. I have some minor connections to IBI in Dublin, but I could go to another either seminary or a secular school in some form or another.

Well, if you want Northern part of the Republic, your nearest university would be in Dublin so you'd not be too far north but more midway. If you wanted to go north, then you'd be better stay on the east side of Northern Ireland (County Down, or County Tyrone but the east side of County Tyrone) since the nearest university would be Queen's University Belfast (there is also University of Ulster but as far as I'm aware, the only seminaries in Northern Ireland are Belfast Bible College and Union Theological College, both of which are connected to Queen's University Belfast, and both reside in Belfast).

There is always an opening for experienced nurses, both up here, and down in the Republic so jobs won't be hard for your wife.
