can anybody tell me what would be a good relatively inexpensive microphone for recording purposes?

What do you mean by "relatively inexpensive?" I would look for a Audio Technica AT4033 as a good large diaphragm condenser, I think they run about $300 or so. A lot of companies are putting out cheap condensers now, but the qulity control can be pretty bad, so I suggest looking at this site if you want cheaper mics, but with a higher qulity than if they were bought elsewhere: www.oktava.com (The Sound Room). This place is nice because they actually test the mics before selling them.

What will you be recording mostly?

I'm recording lead and background vocals. we're using an Akai DPS12i, Tascam TM-D1000, MPX100, and a Blue Max condensor. We recorded our vocals using a shure SM48, but were just not getting the sound we want from it. I was looking at a Nady SCM 1000 Mic.

I havn't heard much good stuff about the Nadys, other than they are made but the same people who make several other budget mics. If you want a quality mic, check at the link in my other post. You pay a little more, but it seems to be worth it. Since lead vocals are often the most important part of a song, I would try and spend a little more and get a good mic.

The AT is good, as is the Rode NT-1, though it is a little bright. The Marshall mics also get some good reviews. It is hard to recomend one mic, because what works for one person may not work for another. What ever you get, make sure you can try it first.

in expensive meaning...$100-200
go Shure SM57
it's the best all rounder on the market

if u're looking for a decent condenser for instruments, try an AKG SE300

the AKG C2000B is good for both instruments and vocals

if u want a decent condensor u're talking around $200
