Irony...clutch issues.

Two weeks ago, my parents purchased me a 1996 Ford F150 with a 5 speed manual transmission. Ironically, the day I get my license, the clutch starts having problems. It goes straight to the floor, and we have to pull it back up. The truck won't even crank. I've heard everything from "loose cable" to "new clutch". I would personally think that it was something simple, but I don't really know. I was wondering if you guys have any wisdom on what the problem is or what I could do to fix it. Thanks in advance! God bless.

Aw, come now. Do we really need to go there?

As a chronic Ford owner, I understand the joke completely. But still, broad strokes make ugly paintings.

When the clutch cable got disconnected on my Subaru, this happened. It was a super easy fix. If you've had no clutch issues previously, I'd take a look at that first. It would certainly make sense that it wouldn't crank.

Yeah, most modern cars have a kill switch attached to the clutch. If the clutch isn't depressed fully, the car won't crank. I don't know if that is the case with this truck.

*edit*

Although.....if the pedal goes all the way down....I don't know.

Broad strokes also make good racing stripes.

Yeah, it does go all the way down. But I'll check the cable in the morning. I just had to have a manual, didn't I? haha

I was raised on a 2003 ford F250. We've had it for five years, and we've taken good care of it and the only thing to go on us was the battery. That was a month ago. It has 108,000 miles on it. Don't tell me fords aren't awesome. My truck is just an old truck, and it needs some TLC. It's my first vehicle, Some problems are expected.

On the '87 ford I used to drive, the hydralic cylinder part of the clutch (it's like a mini master brake cylinder) had worn out. Symptoms were just like you described, press the clutch in, wouldn't return.

if it's a cable clutch you need a cable, if it's a hydraulic clutch you need to see if it's the master cylinder (on the firewall) that's leaking, or if it's the slave cylinder (bolted to the transmission).

Neither is very expensive, or very hard to replace. It's a simple swap & bleed operation.

Update: I've found the issue, but I don't know how to fix it and it's hard to explain. But I'll give it a shot. Remember, I'm not mechanic.

When you hit the clutch down it turns a bar. This bar presses in a little pin. Part of the pin broke off. I don't know how to put it back on. Does that make sense? It's a little plastic piece that broke off and was laying on the floorboard.

Update: I had a mechanic look at it, and he said the pin that broke went to my clutch master cylinder. I'm gonna have to replace it. I don't really want to pay someone to do it if it's an easy thing to do. Do any of you pros think I could figure it out if I had a manual for my vehicle or something?

With a manual, some basic hand tools, and the will to do it, you can succeed, Jnumbers.
