the problem that nobody wants to put out there is that you'll probably never get busted, and worse they can only do something if youre uploading or bootlegging them on the street somewhere

and people wonder why band tshirts are so expensive

Where did you get this idea? The actual downloading is also illegal, so I am fairly sure that they can, in fact, do something.

A Technicality? I would love to see a source on this.

As a general rule, if you can't back it up, please do not post it as fact.

No opinion here.

Could theoretically get you sued for copyright violations.

Not really unethical, but illegal.

Normajean, as a fellow Canadian I was wondering if you know if its legal to decrypt DVDs in Canada?

As far as the music goes, I hate Canada's laws. I believe that copying other people's copyrighted music is immoral so I don't do it. But I still have to pay a hidden tax or royalty on blank cds, etc. Essentially I do the right thing but get punished for the actions of those who don't.

This is the fundamental flaw of DRM and other such "protective" measures. They do little to defer the pirates and only end up hurting those who legally obtain the content.

Well, i've always strongly stood against copywriting and streaming music from torrents and whatnot. I greatly criticized everyone I knew that did it, resulting in a friend of mine deleting about 50 gigs of music, just from the guilt trip I kept laying on him.
Recently (about a month ago) I came to the point where I was so tight on cash that I couldn't afford to purchase all the music on my list, and the list is always growing. So, against my moral standards, I decided to download a torrent program so I could download several albums for free, to ease up on my spending.
I have downloaded three different programs, including Limewire, and I have not been able to find the albums I originally downloaded them for in the first place.
So now I feel ashamed and I deleted two of the programs and there won't be anymore of this ripping off the bands I support deal. I think I might keep Limewire, I like the idea of downloading a song by a band to check them out to see if I want to buy an album or not. But if I compromise that plan whatsoever, its the trash bin for Limewire.

The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men.”

(available routinely for sale to students) Microsoft assumes that is being done and under the law, THAT, is legal, or at least permissible to the point of nobody cares. (and I did just that last week, but I asked to see his license first, to make sure we were both engaging in legal behaviors.)
So if I have a valid key for Windows XP but no disc, is it legal/possible to torrent it and do an install?

I would borrow the cd from a friend. Legal, and no hidden issues.

That is actually a far greyer area than a movie, since it could be argued to be a backup from the original, and since you own the license for the form of media you are downloading. Still wouldn't do it though.

Limewire is rubbish, specially if you want full albums. And can you open torrents in Limewire? You can with Frostwire, though. You could check out individual songs in sites like last.fm or something. Even Youtube.
