| I have downloaded several albums from torrents, simply because my legit copies are too damaged to rip, and because when I bought a new computer, I couldn't get my iTunes Store music onto it. |

I found a program on Downloads.com that could rip dvds to your compy, but it couldnt decrypt the disc so I asked about it on here. (this was at least 6 months ago) anyway the thread was deleted (I think it was by Art) and I was sent a message saying that decrypting discs is illegal and not to do it

It's called P2P (peer-to-peer) for a reason, and as such, no-one is 'innocent' -- even when it comes to uploading media to others.
Also, I don't think the US federal government cares a lot about going after people. That's what the RIAA does. They've been known for ridiculous lawsuits. RIAA sues computer-less family. Others Quote:

And unfortunately, the punishment doesn't fit the crime at.all. Under current copyright laws, each song can be worth $150,000. Settlements are lower than that, but still hardly pocket change.
This guy got hit with sharing 24 songs, settling at $9,250 per song. That comes to $222,000. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...age-award.html
It's a sick system, as much more heinous (and hurtful) crimes only get a figurative slap-on-the-wrist. Not only so, but Congress has been supportive in increasing the punishment for copyright violations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRO-IP_Act http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...gh-enough.html

With that said, there have been many servers that have been raided, sites taken out, and the guys who run them have gotten in legal issues - oink.cd being the most devastating example I can think of. Quote:

ps I think they should just make you buy the song, and pay a fine (not over like $100 per song tho...)

Should physical property rights be thrown in the ditch as well? Then we can really invest in catching rapists and murderers. Oh right property rights are basically the single condition that Adam Smith suggested a capitalism needs to work.
