Good Digital Cameras

I'm thinking about buying a new digital camera and I want to significantly upgrade from my Kodak EasyShare. It's a good camera but it limited. I don't have $2000 to spend so I'm looking for something that isn't ridiculously expensive. Any suggestions?

Well what is your budget or what you think you want to spend?
What are you looking to get out of this camera?
Where you thinking a standard Point and Shoot or more along the SLR lines?

I'm not a professional photographer and I have no aspirations to be one. I take lots of photos and I do enjoy playing with them. I'm hoping to keep it under $1000. I'm not familiar with SLR...you'd have to explain more to me.

I currently own a Kodak EasyShare CX7530. It's a decent camera for taking candid photos around the house and all that. I'd like somethinga little higher up on the food chain.

SLR = Single Lens Reflex. Simply, they are cameras who employ a single lens with a mirror system. The viewfinder, thus, looks through the lens. When a picture is taken, the mirror flips up, shutter fires, and mirror flips down. Lenses are swappable.

SLRs are typically superior in every regard except physical size and price.

Or in layman's terms:
It's a camera with lenses.
You can easily get a good SLR for under $1000.

The Nikon D40 is an excellent DSLR. It's only $599 right now at Walmart, with a basic lens and pretty much everything you need sans the memory card (which, Walmart has a set of two 2gigs for under 20 bucks that fit the Nikon DSLR).

The Nikon D40 is the one currently on my list. Inexpensive (relatively), and swappable lenses...

Yeah. Any Nikon lens will fit it. So later, if you upgrade your camera body to a higher Nikon, you can still use all the lenses.

Srsly. Do it.

Though not all higher-end or older lenses will work on the D40. Just a note (one reason I did not get a D40).

Another option is the Canon Rebel XT.

To be frank, though, most new cameras at reasonable price ranges (I'd say starting about $200) will probably do pretty decently for everyday picture taking. The image quality of P&S cameras is greatly improving year by year, and they're set up to do anything the average day taking photos would require.

DSLRs come in handy for advanced imaging, use of specialty lenses, extremely high image quality, and more complex shooting situations.
