I typically don't like to revive old threads and the last post in this one is over seven years ago. That being said, Metallica released the new single from their upcoming album today. Long time fans had mixed feelings about Death Magnetic (just look at the last two or three posts before this one) and I have yet to meet a single person who like their collaboration with Lou Reed (Lulu). That was five years ago and the fact that not a single person has posted during that time gives you an indication of how well that went.

I had heard (earlier this year) that Metallica were working on new songs but to be honest, I just didn't care. Their former bandmate Dave Mustaine has been so busy with Megadeth that I sort of lost track of Metallica. Imagine my surprise when I saw the new video just about an hour ago. It hearkens back to 1991's "Black" album and maybe even a little farther back than that. It is three minutes and nineteen seconds of classic heavy metal. It is easily the best thing they've done in twenty-five years and that's coming from someone who actually likes Load, ReLoad, and Death Magnetic.

The new album comes out in November but they're pre-selling now. It's a double album, 12 songs, 80 minutes. Here's the video. BTW, it is NSFW due to language.

Metallica - Hardwired

Maybe it's just because I don't listen to this type of music much anymore, but it just sounds like someone trying to write in the style of 80's Metallica without the passion behind it.

Honestly, I think they are trying to win back old fans. They know they lost a bunch of old school thrash fans twenty-five years ago with the Black album. Load and ReLoad didn't win them back. I honestly don't know anyone who likes St. Anger. Death Magnetic seemed like a step back in the right direction but the next thing they did was the LuLu album with Lou Reed. It is horrible even by Lou Reed standards.

I think they're trying to show that they're still Metallica. This first song is okay and it does sound like Metallica but I agree that it seems awfully forced. I guess we'll have to see what the rest of the album sounds like. I'm just glad it sounds something like what I think of when I see the name Metallica.

Haven't listened to them in a long time. But, I dig the older thrash sound, even if it feels hollow, over their recent uninspiring butt-rock sound.

It's still not real Eighties thrash but it is a reasonable facsimile.

Yeah.

Also, I just realised my last post was kinda badly worded. I mean that I think the video you shared sounds way better than their other stuff that has come out semi-recently (like, St. Anger).
