Photo Challenge #13: September 9 - 23, 2008

Hold Your Camera on an Angle

I'm not gonna lie, I stole this from here. Our wedding photographer did this a lot as well, and I really like the way some of them turned out. Usually I'm not a fan of tilted horizons, so this will be a challenge for me for sure. If anyone has better links for examples, feel free to post them.

Rules:

1) Photo must be taken in this time frame. No digging up old photos.

2) Please post entries either as a jpeg attachment or as a thumbnail no bigger than 500px wide with a link to the larger version if you want.

3) We will not exclude images based on conforming to the rules, but keep in mind that one of the things the image will be judged on is how well it shows this week's challenge subject.

4) To keep this thread simple and clean, if you don't want to enter and just want critique before an official entry, post it in the designated photography critique thread, not here. You can however discuss the subject or any entries here if you want.

5) You are encouraged to share your camera settings, shutter speeds, aperture, etc., but EXIF

I have to say... the first time I used angles, which was in my second studio job, I got addicted. It is really an awesome and exciting way to take photographs, in my opinion. I love the movement that results in the composition.... like turning some flat to 3D.

However, I would warn anybody who hasn't done this before this challenge.... try not to get too over-anxious about it once you see how cool it really is, because doing it too often in your regular photography can hurt you. I know this from experience as well.

Anyway, awesome challenge. I'm really excited about this, Rachael.

To be honest, I think this is one of the more cliche techniques out there right now. It can be done well and not come off as cliche, so it's not quite on the level of, say, selective saturation. But there are a lot of people out there who overuse this to death.

I might have a good idea for this. Whether or not I'll be able to pull it off, is a different matter.

Fair enough. Maybe I should have mentioned the challenge is to do it without it looking cliche.

Haha, that's the REAL challenge.

Ooooo, idea for next challenge: selective saturation that isn't cliche. Hahaha.

How about one of these that doesn't suck?

Gotta love wedding photos from the 80's with superimposed couples on wine glasses.

You know, I actually don't think that's all that tacky........ I mean, it's kind of a nifty idea. But then I'm reminded of that time in Intro to Photo class where my instructor told us about lenses that soften the subject, and then everyone proceeded to rant about how tacky they are and how ridiculously 80's old school it looks.... the whole while I'm sitting there thinking, "Aww.... but I like that effect............"

My mom has a lot of portraits with that old school haze filter.

But now we have Photoshop.
