I just would add that there are much better dedicated recording softwares then RiffWorks, and I would probably recommend a more full-featured DAW.

Depends. What operating system you use? You could always try Kristal for Windows or Ardour for Linux. They're both free. They may not be as full of features as you want, but for the price you may as well give it a shot.

I really haven't done much recording, but what I did I have Kristal to be more feature filled. However, I usually got a lag when recording. Personally, I tried it because it was free. It did take a little while longer to understand the process on a very simple level, I do remember that.

Basic recording software is often bundled with hardware like USB audio interfaces and the like, but it generally costs from $100 up to some pretty insane prices. $100 will probably get you Tracktion 3, which is pretty nice software.
