Silhouette

Kinda like the iPod commercials before they jumped the shark.

Rules:

1) Photo must be taken in this time frame. No digging up old photos.

2) Please post entries either as a jpeg attachment or as a thumbnail no bigger than 500px wide with a link to the larger version if you want.

3) We will not exclude images based on conforming to the rules, but keep in mind that one of the things the image will be judged on is how well it shows this week's challenge subject.

4) To keep this thread simple and clean, if you don't want to enter and just want critique before an official entry, post it in the designated photography critique thread, not here. You can however discuss the subject or any entries here if you want.

5) You are encouraged to share your camera settings, shutter speeds, aperture, etc., but EXIF

I like the idea, but I am completely ignorant as to how this effect is attained.

Basically just get a strongly backlit subject and then expose for the background. I will try this one out.

This was really hard.
Harder than I thought, I can't actually take the picture specified.

You need to turn your light towards the background, located behind the subject. That way, the subject will become a dark silhouette against a bright background.


I know patstar already said that essentially, but I don't know if it was completely clear.

It needs to be made clear that this isn't a digital manipulation competition. The iPod commercial comparison was a little misleading. Look at the resource link in the first post before attempting this.

im going to do some at youth this week, seeing as we have heaps of coloured lights.

which is more important though, the Silhouette or the background image?
the sunset in that sample photo was pretty gnarly

Either. Depends on your image.

I'm assuming that we're talking about peoples' silhouettes? Or can inanimate objects qualify too?

Although I didn't create this theme, I think it would be fine... I mean, the photo will be judged on interestingness, so either way, as long as it's interesting.
