Help choose new lens

I am just using the stock lens that came with my camera (a sony a100) but I want to upgrade.
I know nothing about lenses, so I don't know where to start looking, so any help I can get would be great.
The camera using the Minolta AF mounting system, so I think I have a whole lotta options, so recommend away.

you want a good zoom range. like a 24-70mm. Somewhere around there will you give you the most versatility for everyday photos. the maximum aperture (i.e. 2.8, 3.5, 5.6 etc...) should be the smallest number you can afford. Ideally 2.8 would be best, but they're expensive.

This should be a good place to start.

Sigma would be one brand to look for. Whatever you find and consider, I recommend you look at the reviews for it. I always do that when looking at camera stuff.
