I could buy a Treo, which really is a competitive product, for 250 -300 new and have the same features without having to pay monthly for two years. Plus I could use it wherever I wanted.

Not hammering on the iPhone, because I think it is really cool. I just hate how people tend to ignore the facts when it comes to Apple stuff.
um, you still have to pay the monthly service fee with the Treo. If you don't want to pay the monthly service fee, then buy an iPod touch (which I bet will come down in price)

Yes, the monthly service fee with the Treo can be cheaper than the service fee with the iPhone; also, you could use the Treo outside of the country without jumping through hoops. Also, the treo has copy and paste, A2DP, bluetooth file transfer, and you can tether it as a modem for no extra charge. (may or may not violate your terms of service.)

The iPhone is cool, but you do make sacrifices for that coolness.

And I DID buy and iPod touch. I am not attacking the iPhone, as I said. I just think that people swallow whatever Apple presents too readily. This is not the deal to end all deals on a smartphone, at all. It's just a cool, competitively priced phone. If I were in the market for one, it would be in my top 3 phones that I would want to get.

So yes.

i agree, it is missing features that should be there. Stereo Bluetooth Audio and a To Do List are two things that I really want to see and was disappointed that it wasn't included in 2.0. Copy and paste is another. Every phone has some feature that it is missing, though.

I don't think anybody was trying to say the iPhone, with these new important changes, was anything more than a very competitive smart phone.

The data plans fall right in line with Blackberry data plans. It definitely lacks a few things (A2DP and copy/paste), but EVERY phone is going to have drawbacks in one way or another.

Believe me, I'm not a mac fanboy at all. I use macs all the time, but more out of necessity than any real like for them. But I think it's ridiculous to assume that because people are interested in a product that they're "ignoring the facts". For me, the new improvements (particularly the price) make it one of the front runners in the smartphone category featurewise. Sure it's a bummer that you are forced to use the iphone data plan with it, but even that is priced competitively with other carriers. Don't assume I'm a mac fanboy because I recognize a good product. I'll be the first to criticize Apple if they do something wrong (which they do all the time), but I'll also recognize when they do something right. And frankly, they took the biggest problems with the original iphone, fixed them and created a great product.

It can now be had at 199. That is incredibly competitive in the Smart phone market. Heck. an 8gb ipod went for that not long ago.

Unless you're mad about paying half of what you used to pay... in which case, you can give me the other half so I can have one too.
I meant the mobileme thing
