How do you keep focused on Worshipping God.

I know that the Bible says that we must worship in Spirit and in Truth, but I'll need help because everytime I try worshipping God, a few imaginations[most likely good ones] go through my mind. Any methods on how you keep focused on worshipping Jesus?

Are you talking about while singing? Like during hymns or praise songs?

I'll admit that this is a problem area for me too, but one bit of advice I've heard a lot is that when singing, pay very close attention to the words you're saying. It's really easy to get so caught up in singing that you just let the lyrics pass through your mouth without a second thought, especially if your church sings a lot of the same songs (mine does) and they become familiar. So make an extra effort to think about each individual line, what it's saying about God and how it relates to your worship of Him. And if that means maybe taking a break from physically singing and just reading along with the hymn as it's being played, so be it. The physical act of singing isn't the defining aspect of worship.

Again, this is something I struggle with too, and I'll admit that I often have trouble taking my own advice. But I do think it's good advice.

You are confusing praise with worship. We can actively praise God but I believe that worship truly only happens when our spirit's are in the presence of God. Worship is a spontaneous event that happens, quite often, in the context of praise.

I look at it as worship leaders are tools to guide the church in praise. I confess I don't always focus on the lyrics, I'm usually focusing on the timing and mood of the team and the church. I even have gone in half asleep. But I'm sure God placed me here so I try to let Him use me to His will.

First thing ya gotta do is stop playing that eeelectric guitar. That one is definately gonna distract you from worshiping God and turn ya right around to worshiping the devil.

..........

In all sersiousness. When im on stage im mostly worried about doing my job right, which is playing the guitar on time, with about the right feel.

Before and aftewards is where I do the actual focusing on God.

What does that mean? I don't mean to be rude, but that sounds like spiritual mumbo jumbo.

JerRocks2day,

I talk to the other worship leaders in other churches they say in agreement just do your job. Just do it to the best of your abilities. God can bless you no matter what you feelings are.

according to Romans 12, true worship is to offer your body as a living sacrifice in view of God's mercy. This means that because Jesus died for you, whatever you do (presumably in this case playing your guitar in a Christian meeting), you do for God's sake to fulfil God's desires rather than your own. God's desires in that situation are presumably that you play your guitar in such a way as to help the other people focus on the truths about God that they are singing about - if you were 'focusing on God' to the detriment of other people's 'focusing on God' htat wouldn't be worship, that would be selfish self-gratification!

everytime I try worshipping God

Take the "I" out of that and stop trying......worship is not something we try to do either we have it within us and it cannot help but pour out or we don't.

What you are calling worship is a reflection of Gods glory in us we are but mirrors, that are often fogged, I would ask God to show you what is fogging your mirror preventing His Glory from fully shining through you.
You sound like you have the desire to worship (or sing His praise which is what you are describing) and have confessed there is something hindering it, we need to get to the root and make sure it is getting nourishment and trim off the dead members, then the leaves will produce buds and flower.

keep shinin'

My two cents:

The Savior wants us to worship based on truth, or in other words based on the true principles of his gospel. Such things can only be known through the Spirit (John 16:13) We can seek the spirit through prayer, faith, studying the scriptures, pondering them, following the Saviors example and keeping the commandments he has given us in the scriptures.

I used to have a similar problem. I could worship from the pews, but put me up front and all I could think of was what I was doing musically.

The answer for me was two fold. First, take the time before you start to pray and prepare your heart to enter God's presence. Clear your mind of distractions and commit this time fully to God.

The second thing (if you are like me) is practice more. I found that when playing my guitar became second nature, I could really focus on praising God with a worshipful heart. I actually find now that it is easier to worship with a guitar in my hand than by popping in a cd like I used to do. Try bringing God the offering of your music in the privacy of your own home first. And above all, remember, when your heart is in the right place, you play for an audience of One.

Hope this helps, it sure helped me.
